In the early times of aviation, aircraft flight controls were purely mechanical systems comprised of pulleys and cables deflecting the aircraft’s control surfaces about their hinges. The control stick/pedal inputs applied by the pilot counteracted the aerodynamic forces acting upon the control surfaces.
