Safe and effective treatment of acute liver failure by allogeneic transplantation of stem cell-derived Encapsulated Liver Tissue without immunosuppression
2020
Background & Aim Acute liver failure (ALF) consists in a dramatic loss of liver functions resulting in a survival rate Methods, Results & Conclusion We implanted human ELT into the peritoneal cavity of immunocompetent mice with CCl4-induced ALF, without immunosuppression, left it in place for 4 weeks, and then explanted it. The ELT effectively replaced liver functions and improved survival (68% at 35 days vs. 28% in controls, HR 0.3, p Human iPSC-derived Encapsulated Liver Tissue (ELT) improves survival of immunocompetent mice with CCl4-induced acute liver failure, without the need of immunosuppression. Once the host liver regenerates, the ELT can be safely explanted leaving the animals cured.
