Assessment of library user education programmes in universities in Benue state

This study is on the assessment of library user education programmes i n Universities in Benue State. The study was set to identify content of library user education programmes and determine the importance of library user education programmes to students of insti tutions under study as well as effectiveness of library user education in universities in Benue State. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population of the study was 6253 and the sample size was 625 students selected using disproportionate stratified random sampling technique. The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire. A total of 625 copies of questionnaire were administered by the researcher while a response rate of 595 (95.2%) was recorded. Data was analyzed using frequencies, percentages and mean. The study revealed that library orientation, use of library and library communication technology (GST 114), bibliographic instruction use of information resources and information literacy programme are provided to students of the institutions. This is important and necessary for st udents’ academic career as it teaches students how to make effective use of the library effectively. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that more library user education programme be introduced in order to incorporate practical sessions will enhance orientation and skills that will enable them identify, locate, evaluate and use information resources to improve their academic performance.
