Explanation of diagnostic reasoning. An analysis of medical texts
1992
In a recent survey we have found that explanation in current knowledge-based systems is still very restricted and differs from the standard how and why explanation frequently found in the literature. Users seemed satisfied, however, with the explanations offered. For expert users explanation appeared to be hardly needed. The systems studied were not very complex, therefore our conclusions cannot be generalized. Explanation might be much more important in large systems operating in complex domains, as has been frequently emphasized in the literature. To know what is actually required, though, empirical studies are necessary
