Giant magnetostriction of melt-spun Fe85Ga15 ribbons

2004
Large magnetostrictions of - 1300 and + 1100 ppm have been obtained in our Fe85Ga15 ribbon samples. This was attributed to the shape anisotropy of ribbon and the existence of Ga atom clusters with preferential orientation in the melt - spun Fe-85 Ga-15 alloys. A small increase of magnetostriction with increasing temperature was observed between 163 and 321K. However, at higher temperatures, the magnetostriction increases sharply with increasing temperature.
