Corrosion by Sulphur

Sulphur is a relatively strong corrodent (or oxidising agent) as seen from the free energies of metal sulphide formation shown in Table 8.1 . It is frequently present in fossil fuels and causes special forms of corrosion in petroleum and petrochemical processes based on these feedstocks, as well as in combustion processes. Because metal sulphides are very different from the corresponding oxides, corrosion by sulphur is generally much more rapid and merits separate consideration.
