ample, two astrocytoma of the cerebello-pontile region had Torkildsen tube after partial removal, and now they are having no signs of increased intracranial pressure even though they have neurological signs of reoccurrance.
In our clinic we have treated 69 cases with skull tumors over the past 13 years.32 of these cases were benign. The average age was 25 years old.Common sites were
Morphological features of the autopsied specimens of 15 adult patients with supratentorial gliomas were analysed and the characteristics of recurrence of gliomas were searched for. The correlation between the computed tomography (CT) findings before death and the microscopic findings of a whole mount section of the brain was also analysed. The cases consisted of 2 grade II, 7 grade III and 6 grade IV astrocytomas. The characteristic CT findings before death were regrowth of the tumor mass or the occurrence of a new enhanced lesion in 14 out of 15 patients. The enhanced lesion showing regrowth of the tumor was located in the same site as the previous tumor mass. The new enhanced lesion, resulting in a trans or subependymal tumor spread, was seen in the ventricular wall, and this was a characteristic feature of the recurrence of gliomas. In morphological analysis, tumor regrowth and recurrent tumor cell infiltration into the brain parenchyma occurred in several patterns. One was the extending mode caused by regrowth of the residual tumor in spite of adjuvant therapy. CT scan correctly showed such tumor recurrence as an enhanced lesion, especially as a ring or nodular enhancement. In the second pattern, a spread of tumor cells occurred along the interfiber spaces to the brain stem, or to the contralateral cerebral hemisphere through the corpus callosum. CT scan could hardly show such a type of tumor cell infiltration. The third mode of tumor propagation was cerebrospinal fluid seeding, with intraventricular or subarachnoid tumor growth. The CT scan examined before death could display the tumor invasion of the intraventricular seeding in 3 out of 8 patients. Histologically, reinvasion of the tumor cells from the subarachnoid space to the brain parenchyma was along the Virchow-Robin spaces of penetrating blood vessels. If tumor regrowth was accompanied by angiogenesis, CT scan could show the recurrence as an enhanced lesion. Marked angiogenesis occurred in the margin of the residual tumor with central necrosis due to adjuvant therapy.
Fine powdered Mo and MoS2 were synthesized in vapor phase reactions by a TEA-CO2laser-induced breakdown technique. Molybdenum particles were prepared from Mo (CO)6; molybdenum sulfide particles were prepared from a mixture of Mo (CO)6 and CS2. The particulatem aterials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, ICP ctomic emission spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The particles are monodispersed, neafly sphedcal, and 0.05-0.4μm indiameter. An X-ray diffraction study indicates that the Mo particle is crystalline and MoS2particle is amorphous. The yield of the Mo particle increased linearly with increasing laser pulseenergy.
The growing particles-gas reaction is very important in the molecular laser isotope separation of uranium-235 (235U) at RIKEN, because an isotope exchange reaction between growing 235U enriched UF5 particles and natural UF6 is thought to be one of the most serious problems which causes the separation factor to deterionate. We present here a new simple calculation method to estimate the influence of this reaction system. Using an exchange reaction probability of 1.1 ×10-9 reported by G. Y. Grigore'v et al, , we found that the influence of the isotope exchange reaction between growing 235U enriched UF5 particles and natural UF6 gas was negligible to the separation factor.
In the present study, we developed models to predict unresponsiveness to intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) in Kawasaki disease (KD).We reviewed clinical records of 546 consecutive KD patients (development dataset) and 204 subsequent KD patients (validation dataset). All received IVIG for treatment of KD. IVIG nonresponders were defined by fever persisting beyond 24 hours or recrudescent fever associated with KD symptoms after an afebrile period. A 7-variable logistic model was constructed, including day of illness at initial treatment, age in months, percentage of white blood cells representing neutrophils, platelet count, and serum aspartate aminotransferase, sodium, and C-reactive protein, which generated an area under the receiver-operating-characteristics curve of 0.84 and 0.90 for the development and validation datasets, respectively. Using both datasets, the 7 variables were used to generate a simple scoring model that gave an area under the receiver-operating-characteristics curve of 0.85. For a cutoff of 0.15 or more in the logistic regression model and 4 points or more in the simple scoring model, sensitivity and specificity were 86% and 67% in the logistic model and 86% and 68% in the simple scoring model. The kappa statistic is 0.67, indicating good agreement between the logistic and simple scoring models. Our predictive models showed high sensitivity and specificity in identifying IVIG nonresponders among KD patients.
Photopolymerized ${\mathrm{C}}_{60}$ film has been studied under a water-vapor-free condition by means of in situ high-resolution (0.25 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$) Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. It was found that the IR spectrum of a pristine ${\mathrm{C}}_{60}$ film changed markedly after 10-h irradiation with a 500 W mercury lamp at a CsI substrate temperature of 27 \ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}C, whereas no change in the IR spectrum of the ${\mathrm{C}}_{60}$ film was observed after 20-h irradiation with the lamp at a substrate temperature of 100 \ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}C. Compared with the previous FT-IR result reported by Rao et al. [Science 259, 955 (1993)], the present IR spectra for the photopolymerized film had many new peaks and the peaks corresponding to the four intrinsic intensive IR-active modes were split. A ${\mathrm{C}}_{60}$ dimer structure is postulated after comparison between the present results and the theoretical IR calculations reported by Adams et al. [Phys. Rev. B 50, 17 471 (1994)] and Pederson and Quong [Phys. Rev. Lett. 74, 2319 (1995)].
