Variation of the oxygen content in tetragonal, calcium oxide-doped zirconia

A thermogravimetric study of the oxygen activity dependent variation of the oxygen content in CaO-doped zirconia has been performed at different dopant concentrations within the stability limit of the tetragonal solid solution at temperatures between 1200 and 1300°C. The experimental results are compatible with a simple defect model incorporating oxygen vacancies and dopant cations, not or partially associated with each other. In tetragonal, CaO-doped zirconia, the largest mass change with increasing oxygen activity occurs at high oxygen activities and is due to a component activity dependent disorder.

Induced Circularly Polarized Luminescence and Exciton Fine Structure Splitting in Magnetic-Doped Chiral Perovskites

Magnetic impurity doping in semiconductors has emerged as an important strategy to endow exotic photophysical and magnetic properties. While most reported hosts are centrosymmetric semiconductors, doping magnetic ions into a noncentrosymmetric chiral semiconductor can offer additional control of photonic and spin polarization. In this work, we synthesized a Mn2+-doped chiral two-dimensional (2D) perovskite, Mn2+:(R-MPA)2PbBr4 (R-MPA+ = R-methyl phenethylammonium). We found that the optical activity of chiral 2D perovskites is enhanced with an increased concentration of Mn2+ ions. Additionally, efficient energy transfer from the chiral host to the Mn2+ dopants is observed. This energy transfer process gives rise to circularly polarized luminescence from the excited state of Mn2+ (4T1 → 6A1), exhibiting a photoluminescence quantum yield up to 24% and a dissymmetry factor of 11%. The exciton fine structures of undoped and Mn2+-doped (R-MPA)2PbBr4 are further studied through magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy. Our analysis shows that chiral organic cations lead to an exciton fine structure splitting energy as large as 5.0 meV, and the splitting is further increased upon Mn2+ doping. Our results reveal the strong impacts of molecular chirality and magnetic dopants on the exciton structures of halide perovskites.

Platinum-a non-inert material reacting with oxides

Platinum is a non-inert material which reacts with oxides when in contact at high temperatures. The degree of such reactions depends strongly on the oxygen partial pressures established in the environment of the Pt-oxide reaction couple. If the oxygen partial pressure is decreased, oxygen is released due to (i) the dissolution of metallic components of oxides into Pt and (ii) changes in the oxide stoichiometry. This oxygen release leads to a decrease in the mass of the Pt-oxide system. Often, this mass change is primarily caused by reaction (i), whereas the contribution from reaction (ii) is insignificant, especially at low oxygen partial pressures and if the Pt/oxide mass ratio and the occurring oxide stoichiometry changes are small. The degree of dissolution of metallic components of oxides into Pt increases with decreasing oxygen activity. The Pt-oxide systems discussed in this article are PtZrO2, PtNiO, and PtFeOx. For the first two systems experimental data are presented and analyzed thermo-dynamically. For the PtFeOx system results of thermodynamic calculations are discussed and compared with experimental data from the literature. Several consequences arising from the dissolution of metallic components of oxides into Pt are also discussed.

Fe‐cation Doping in NiSe₂ as an Effective Method of Electronic Structure Modulation towards High‐Performance Lithium‐Sulfur Batteries

Abstract The commercialization of Li−S batteries is hindered by the shuttling of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), the sluggish sulfur redox kinetics as well as the low sulfur utilization during charge/discharge processes. Herein, a free‐standing cathode material was developed, based on Fe‐doped NiSe 2 nanosheets grown on activated carbon cloth substrates (Fe‐NiSe 2 /ACC) for high‐performance Li−S batteries. Fe‐doping in NiSe 2 plays a key role in the electronic structure modulation of NiSe 2 , enabling improved charge transfer with the adsorbed LiPSs molecules, stronger interactions with the active sulfur species and higher electrical conductivity. Effective promotion of the sulfur redox kinetics and enhanced sulfur utilization were achieved under high areal sulfur loadings. The stronger interactions with LiPSs together with the unique 3D structure of Fe‐NiSe 2 /ACC also induced the transformation of Li 2 S 2 /Li 2 S growth from conventional 2D films to 3D particles, significantly eliminating the barriers of solid nucleation and growth during the phase transition of liquid LiPSs to solid Li 2 S 2 /Li 2 S. With a high sulfur loading of 9.9 mg cm −2 , the Fe‐NiSe 2 /ACC cathode enabled a high area capacity of 9.14 mAh cm −2 with a low average decay of 0.11 % per cycle over 200 cycles at 0.1 C.

Surface and Interfacial Engineering for Multifunctional Nanocarbon Materials

Multifunctional materials are accelerating the development of soft electronics with integrated capabilities including wearable physical sensing, efficient thermal management, and high-performance electromagnetic interference shielding. With outstanding mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties, nanocarbon materials offer ample opportunities for designing multifunctional devices with broad applications. Surface and interfacial engineering have emerged as an effective approach to modulate interconnected structures, which may have tunable and synergistic effects for the precise control over mechanical, transport, and electromagnetic properties. This review presents a comprehensive summary of recent advances empowering the development of multifunctional nanocarbon materials via surface and interfacial engineering in the context of surface and interfacial engineering techniques, structural evolution, multifunctional properties, and their wide applications. Special emphasis is placed on identifying the critical correlations between interfacial structures across nanoscales, microscales, and macroscales and multifunctional properties. The challenges currently faced by the multifunctional nanocarbon materials are examined, and potential opportunities for applications are also revealed. We anticipate that this comprehensive review will promote the further development of soft electronics and trigger ideas for the interfacial design of nanocarbon materials in multidisciplinary applications.

Rashba Band Splitting and Bulk Photovoltaic Effect Induced by Halogen Bonds in Hybrid Layered Perovskites

Abstract Non‐covalent interactions play an essential role in directing the self‐assembly of hybrid organic–inorganic crystals. In hybrid halide perovskites, hydrogen bonding has been the paramount non‐covalent interaction. Here, we show another non‐covalent interaction, namely, the halogen bond interaction, that directs a symmetry‐breaking assembly in a new series of two‐dimensional (2D) perovskites (ICH 2 CH 2 NH 3 ) 2 (CH 3 NH 3 ) n −1 Pb n I 3 n +1 ( n is the layer thickness, n =1–4). Structural analysis shows that the halogen bond strength varies with the layer thickness. For the odd number ( n =1, 3) layered perovskites, stronger halogen interaction leads to centrosymmetric structures, whereas for the n =2 layered perovskites, weaker halogen bonds result in non‐centrosymmetric structures. Transient reflection spectroscopy shows a suppressed radiative recombination rate ( k 2 ≈0) and prolonged spin lifetime for n =2 structure, suggesting an enhanced Rashba band splitting effect. The structural asymmetry is further confirmed with a reversible bulk photovoltaic effect. Our work provides a new design strategy to enable hybrid perovskites with emerging properties and functionalities associated with structural asymmetry.

Chemical Control of Magnetic Ordering in Hybrid Fe–Cl Layered Double Perovskites

Recent discoveries of novel physics in two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials have sparked the search of new layered magnetic semiconductors. Compared to the traditional inorganic 2D van der Waals crystals, hybrid organic–inorganic metal–halide frameworks offer significantly enhanced chemical and structural versatility, where their optical, electronic, and magnetic properties can be readily modulated with both organic and inorganic components. Here, we reported a series of new Fe–Cl-based layered double perovskites LnMIMIIICl8, [n = 4, L = phenylethylammonium or chiral R-(+)-β-methylphenethylammonium and n = 2, L = 1,4-butanediammonium; MI = Ag/Na; MIII = Fe/In]. UV–vis measurements show that their optical band gaps are highly tunable by varying the organic cations, MI ion, and MIII ion. Magnetic susceptibility measurements suggest an antiferromagnetic coupling between the nearest FeIII–FeIII, where the Curie–Weiss temperature, Néel temperature, and frustration factors can be easily modulated with their compositions and dimensionality. Our study demonstrates the rich and interesting magnetic properties in these layered transition-metal–halide double perovskites and paves the way for design of multifunctional magnetic materials.

Efficient Spin‐Light‐Emitting Diodes With Tunable Red to Near‐Infrared Emission at Room Temperature

Abstract Spin light‐emitting diodes (spin‐LEDs) are important for spin‐based electronic circuits as they convert the carrier spin information to optical polarization. Recently, chiral‐induced spin selectivity (CISS) has emerged as a new paradigm to enable spin‐LED as it does not require any magnetic components and operates at room temperature. However, CISS‐enabled spin‐LED with tunable wavelengths ranging from red to near‐infrared (NIR) has yet to be demonstrated. Here, chiral quasi‐2D perovskites are developed to fabricate efficient spin‐LEDs with tunable wavelengths from red to NIR region by tuning the halide composition. The optimized chiral perovskite films exhibit efficient circularly polarized luminescence from 675 to 788 nm, with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) exceeding 86% and a dissymmetry factor ( g lum ) ranging from 8.5 × 10 −3 to 2.6 × 10 −2 . More importantly, direct circularly polarized electroluminescence (CPEL) is achieved at room temperature in spin‐LEDs. This work demonstrated efficient red and NIR spin‐LEDs with the highest external quantum efficiency (EQE) reaching 12.4% and the electroluminescence (EL) dissymmetry factors ( g EL ) ranging from 3.7 × 10 −3 to 1.48 × 10 −2 at room temperature. The composition‐dependent CPEL performance is further attributed to the prolonged spin lifetime as revealed by ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy.
