Limited research exists on the use of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD). This study investigates the effects of ECT on inflammatory markers in adolescents aged 13-18 suffering from severe MDD, evaluating its efficacy in modulating cellular inflammatory markers and ameliorating depressive symptoms.
The consumption of takeaways is becoming increasingly prevalent. Despite this, the relationship between takeaway food consumption and depressive symptoms in Chinese populations has not been clarified. Furthermore, the factors that mediate the association between takeaway frequency and depressive symptoms are unknown. Questionnaires were employed to collect data from 6,417 new students at Chongqing Medical University in the autumn of 2023, including sociodemographic information, takeaway frequency, physical activity levels (measured by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form), and depressive symptoms (measured by the Patient Health Questionnaire-9). Multiple linear regression and mediation analysis were performed. Multiple imputations were used to fill in missing data through sensitivity analyses. Among 6417 participants, 2,606 (40.6%) students ordered takeaway at least once a week, with 235 (3.7%) of them ordering takeaway food every day. Takeaway frequency was significantly associated with depressive symptoms (β=0.034, P=0.006), and physical activity partially mediated this relationship (95% bootstrap confidence interval=0.0024, 0.0371). The study highlights the negative relationship between takeaway frequency and emotional well-being, emphasizing the need to focus on the emotional health of frequent takeaway food consumers. Moreover, our study suggests that increased physical activity may alleviate takeaway-induced mood-related outcomes.
Major depression is a serious and chronic mental illness. However, its etiology is poorly understood. Although glial cells have been increasingly implicated in the pathogenesis of depression, the specific role of microglia and astrocytes in stress-induced depression remains unclear. Translocator protein (TSPO) has long been considered a marker of neuroinflammation and microglial activation. However, this protein is also present on astrocytes. Thus, it is necessary to explore the relationships between TSPO, microglia, and astrocytes in the context of depression. In this study, C57BL/6J male mice were subjected to chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) for 5 weeks. Subsequently, sucrose preference and tail suspension tests (TSTs) were performed to assess anhedonia and despair in these mice. [18F]DPA-714 positron emission tomography (PET) was adopted to dynamically assess the changes in glial cells before and 2, 4, or 5 weeks after CUS exposure. The numbers of TSPO+ cells, ionized calcium-binding adaptor molecule (Iba)-1+ microglial cells, TSPO+/Iba-1+ cells, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)+ astrocytes, TSPO+/GFAP+ cells, and TUNEL-stained microglia were quantified using immunofluorescence staining. Real-time PCR was used to evaluate interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-4, and IL-18 expression in the hippocampus. We observed that hippocampal [18F]DPA-714 uptake significantly increased after 2 weeks of CUS. However, the signal significantly decreased after 5 weeks of CUS. CUS significantly reduced the number of Iba-1+, TSPO+, and TSPO+/Iba-1+ cells in the hippocampus, especially in the CA1 and dentate gyrus (DG) subregions. However, this intervention increased the number of GFAP+ astrocytes in the CA2/CA3 subregions of the hippocampus. In addition, microglial apoptosis in the early stage of CUS appeared to be involved in microglia loss. Further, the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β and IL-18) was significantly decreased after CUS. In contrast, the expression of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-4 was significantly increased after 2 weeks of CUS. These results suggested that the CUS-induced dynamic changes in hippocampal [18F]DPA-714 uptake and several cytokines may be due to combined microglial and astrocyte action. These findings provide a theoretical reference for the future clinical applications of TSPO PET.
To describe the prevalence and risk factors for suicide ideation among college students in Chongqing city.Data on suicide ideation and related factors were collected from 9808 college students at 11 colleges randomly selected in Chongqing. A multiple logistic regression model was used to identify risk factors for suicide ideation.1279 (13.0%) of the 9808 students reported suicide ideation and the constituent ratio of boys and girls was 3:4 while risk factors for suicide ideation were ranked as follows: high frequency of feeling hopeless in prior year (OR = 5.07, 95%CI: 4.27 - 6.02); having psychological problems in recent 1 month that affecting daily lives and learning (2.07, 1.79 - 2.38); relatives having suicide behavior (1.77, 1.52 - 2.08); having had sexual experience (1.95, 1.65 - 2.30); being female (1.66, 1.45 - 1.90) and friends who had had suicide attempts (1.46, 1.28 - 1.67); having diseases in the last 1 month that affecting daily lives and learning (1.29, 1.08 - 1.52).The prevalence of suicide ideation among these college students was high that calls the development, implementation and assessment of suicide prevention plans for college students that focusing on the risk factors identified for suicide ideation.
Abstract Background Major depressive disorder is characterized by a high risk of relapse. We aimed to compare the prophylactic effects of different antidepressant medicines (ADMs). Methods PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Embase and the Web of Science were searched on 4 July 2019. A pooled analysis of parametric survival curves was performed using a Bayesian framework. The main outcomes were hazard ratios (HRs), relapse-free survival and mean relapse-free months. Results Forty randomized controlled trials were included. The 1-year relapse-free survival for ADM (76%) was significantly better than that for placebo (56%). Most of the relapse difference (86.5%) occurred in the first 6 months. Most HRs were not constant over time. Proof of benefit after 6 months of follow-up was not established partially because of small differences between the drug and placebo after 6 months. Almost all studies used an ‘enriched’ randomized discontinuation design, which may explain the high relapse rates in the first 6 months after randomization. Conclusions The superiority of ADM v. placebo was mainly attributed to the difference in relapse rates that occurred in the first 6 months. Our analysis provided evidence that the prophylactic efficacy was not constant over time. A beneficial effect was observed, but the prevention of new episodes after 6 months was questionable. These findings may have implications for clinical practice.
Purpose: The aim of our study was to explore the relation between serum levels of non-enzymatic antioxidants, thyroid function with the risk of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in depressed adolescents. Patients and Methods: We retrospected the electronic records of 454 hospitalized patients aged 13– 17 years old with a diagnosis of major depressive disorder (239 patients with NSSI and 215 subjects without NSSI), and collected their demographic and clinical information, including serum levels of total bilirubin (Tbil), uric acid (UA), free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). Results: The incidence of NSSI was 52.6% among depressed adolescents aged 13– 17, 57.1% in female and 38.5% in male. After using the propensity scoring method to exclude the influence of age between the two groups, it was found that patients with NSSI showed lower levels of Tbil (P=0.046) and UA (P=0.015) compared with those without NSSI. Logistic regression results showed that serum UA was associated with NSSI behavior in female patients (OR=0.995, 95% CI: 0.991– 0.999, P=0.014), and TSH was associated with NSSI in male participants (OR=0.499, 95% CI: 0.267– 0.932, P=0.029). Conclusion: Female and male may have different pathological mechanisms of NSSI. NSSI is more likely to be related to antioxidant reaction in female adolescent patients, while more likely to be related to thyroid function in male depressed adolescent patients.
