Objectives: This study aimed to develop a virtual reality (VR)-based oral strength training program and apply it to older adults to assess improvements in oral function. Methods: The oral strength training was conducted 12 times over 6 weeks, from late August to early October 2023, at the participants’ institution. Each session lasted approximately 60 minutes. Forty-one participants aged 65 and older were randomly assigned to either the intervention or control group. Results: Following the VRbased oral muscle strength training, the O’Leary index decreased by 0.42 (p<0.01), and the Löe & Silness index decreased by 1.11 (p<0.01). Additionally, there was a 1.24 reduction in tongue tie (p<0.01) and a 0.55 increase in salivation (p<0.05). Post hoc comparisons revealed significant differences between the two groups in gingival bacterial film (p<0.001), gingivitis (p<0.001), and tongue plaque (p<0.01). Conclusions: The study found that VR-based oral muscle strength training can improve oral health among older adults. Therefore, the VR-based oral muscle strength training program developed in this study could be beneficial in health promotion programs for the elderly.
Optical properties of cobalt-doped zinc aluminosilicate transparent glass ceramics in the visible – near-infrared (IR) spectral range have been studied. It was shown that the absorption and luminescence properties of these glass ceramics are defined mainly by tetrahedrally coordinated Co2+ ions located in ZnAl2O4 gahnite nanocrystals formed in the glass ceramic matrix. The luminescence in the visible and near IR was assigned to the transitions from the T14(4P) to the A24 and T24 energy levels of tetrahedrally coordinated Co2+ ion. Absorption saturation and bleaching relaxation under excitation of the A24→4T1(4F) transition were studied. Luminescence decay and bleaching relaxation times lie in the ranges 25–200 and 500–800 ns, respectively, depending on the Co concentration. The value of the ground-state absorption cross section of tetrahedrally coordinated Co2+ ions in zinc aluminosilicate transparent glass ceramics was estimated to be 2.0×10−19 cm2 at the wavelength of 1.54 μm.
We aimed to analyze the trends and associations between the oral and mental health of Korean adolescents using the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Surveys. In total, 713,713 adolescents who participated in the surveys were included. To examine trends in oral and mental health, Pearson's correlation coefficients were calculated between the weighted percentages and years, and the regression line slope was assessed to estimate annual changes. A complex sample logistic regression analysis was also performed. Experiencing oral symptoms and suicide-related factors both showed a gradually decreasing trend from 2008 and slight increases in 2017 and 2016, respectively. Compared with adolescents who had no oral symptoms, those with all six oral symptoms showed an increase in suicide attempts in the last 12 months, suicide ideation, and feelings of sadness and despair. In conclusion, experiencing more oral symptoms is associated with an increased risk of suicide-related factors.
We have investigated the association of oral health with development of dementia in elderly Koreans. Data for subjects aged ≥65 years who underwent regular National Health Insurance Service check-ups and received dental care in 2017 were analysed. Those treated for dementia in 2017 served as the dementia group and those with no record of dementia in 2002-2017 as the control group. Explanatory variables were sex, age, household income, place of residence, smoking status, alcohol consumption, and presence of diabetes mellitus and hypertension, periodontitis, and removable dentures. Regression analysis showed that dementia was significantly more common in women than in men and in those aged ≥81 years than in those aged 65-70 years. The risk of dementia was highest in the 'upper-middle' income group and in the rural population. Smokers and those who consumed alcohol were less likely to develop dementia. Subjects with diabetes were more likely to have dementia than those without it, as were those with hypertension. Dementia was less likely in subjects with periodontitis and more likely in those with removable dentures. Therefore, loss of teeth may contribute to development of dementia.
본 연구는 구강위생용품 사용에 미치는 영향을 조사하여 향후 이와 관련된 구강보건교육 방향의 시사점을 제공하고자 2013년 12월부터 2014년 5월까지 약 6개월 동안 서울 및 경기도에 위치한 치과의원에 내원한 환자 320명의 자료를 수집하여, 이 중 응답이 미흡한 21부를 제외한 다음 수집된 자료의 93.4%에 해당되는 299부를 분석하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 첫째, 조사대상자의 구강위생용품 관련 구강보건교육과 인지, 사용간의 상관관계는 구강위생용품 관련 구강보건교육을 받는 경우 구강위생용품 인지 정도(p<0.001)와 사용 정도(p<0.001)가 증가하는 것으로 나타났고, 구강위생용품 인지정도가 증가할수록 사용 정도도 증가하는 것으로 나타났다(p<0.001). 둘째, 구강위생용품 교육은 종속변수인 구강위생용품 인지에 통계적으로 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다(p<0.001). 이상의 결과에서 구강병을 예방하기 위하여 구강상태에 적합한 구강위생용품의 올바른 지식과 사용방법에 대한 교육의 기회를 넓히고, 환자에게 구강위생용품에 대한 사용동기를 부여할 수 있는 체계적이고 대중적인 구강보건교육 프로그램 개발과 시행, 홍보를 통해 구강건강 향상에 기여해야 한다고 사료된다. In this study, to provide the implications of dental health care training direction in the future after researching the effect on the use of dental hygiene devices, data were collected from 320 patients who visited dental clinics located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do for about 6 months between December 2013 and May 2014. Among them, the following results were obtained by analyzing 299 copies accounting for 93.4% of the collected data after excluding 21 copies lacking in answer. It was shown that education about dental hygiene devices had statistically significant effects on the dependent variables, perception of dental hygiene devices (p<0.001). Based upon the results above, it is considered that for the sake of prevention of oral diseases, more opportunities to learn correct knowledge and usage of suitable dental hygiene devices for individual oral conditions should be provided for patients, and active patient education as well as the development, implementation and publicity of systematic and popular oral health education programs will contribute to improved oral health.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of the awareness towards dental radiation exposure and concern in the adults. Methods : A self-reported questionnaires was filled out by 470 adults over 19 years old in Seoul from May 16 to July 10, 2013. Results : Fear for dental radiography showed that those who positively thought of radiography had 2.86 folds necessity of radiography than those who did not. Positive responders worried about the hazards of dental radiation 4.64 folds than the negative responders. More worried responders had felt the radiation hazards 1.83 folds than those who worried less. The worried responders also had higher awareness of dental radiation hazards. Conclusions : Frequent use of dental radiography is able to be prevented by protective devices. So it is important to prevent the possible hazards of the dental radiography by personal protective education.
The intent was to analyse the association of periodontitis with the development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) using a representative population-based cohort and longitudinal matched-cohort design. Participants were 40 years of age or older and had not been diagnosed with RA between 2002 and 2006. Among the participants, those who were newly diagnosed with periodontitis between 2004 and 2006 (excluding cases that had already been diagnosed with periodontitis between 2002 and 2003) were allotted to the periodontitis group. Among the participants, those who had never been diagnosed with periodontitis between 2002 and 2006 formed the control group, matched by sex, age, and household income at a 1:1 ratio. From 2007 to 2018, the 2 groups (n = 691,506) were followed to monitor the development of RA. The t-test and χ2 test compared the general characteristics and health-related variables of both groups. The Kaplan-Meier method with a log-rank test was conducted to compare the incidence of RA in both groups. The hazard ratio (HR) and adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) were calculated using a Cox proportional hazard regression analysis to evaluate the risk of subsequent RA. Univariate analysis revealed that the periodontitis group was more likely to develop RA than the control group (hazard ratio 1.10), and multivariate analysis also revealed a higher incidence risk of RA (adjusted hazard ratio 1.09) in the periodontitis group. Our findings demonstrate that periodontitis is associated with an increased risk of developing RA.
