The inter-hemispheric symmetry of electroencephalographic (EEG) post-movement beta-event-related synchronization (PMBS) after movements on a drawing board was studied in eight acute stroke subjects with mild hemiparesis and eight normal subjects. A follow-up testing was conducted 3 months after the initial recordings with a twofold purpose: (1) to validate the reproducibility of the experimental protocol in normal subjects; and (2) to study changes of inter-hemispheric PMBS-symmetry as a response to recovery of motor function. PMBS values were calculated and their topographic distributions illustrated at various time instances following movement offset. Significant PMBS patterns were present in all normal subjects, with only minor differences within consecutive recordings. The side of hemiparesis in acute stroke subjects could be distinguished (P = 0.04) on the basis of the signed symmetry index, a quantitative measure of lateralization. The follow-up testing on three recovered stroke subjects revealed a trend of changes in the lateralization towards the contralateral side of movement, an indication that the cortical organization of movement following recovery turned out as reported for normal subjects. Further clinical investigations need to be carried out to evaluate the relationship between recovery and PMBS symmetry on a large number of subjects, using the method presented here.
Nutri-score is simplified front-of-pack nutrition labelling on packed food products, used in a broad international context to categorize food products into five colour/letter grades (best A to worst E) that reflect the foods’ nutritional quality. The labels serve as potential help for consumers to make healthier food choices and encourage food industries to improve the nutritional quality of the foods they produce. The aim of this study was to determine the nutritional scores and grades of meat products present on the Serbian retail market. Ultimately, this should point out to consumers the importance of proper nutrition and encourage the meat industry to adapt to new labelling requirements. During a two year period, 310 packaged locally-produced meat products were purchased at retail, graded according to the Nutri-score method and categorized into 13 ad hoc product groups. The results obtained showed that 82.5% of all examined meat products had nutritional scores that meant they were classified as unhealthy foods, while only 2.9% of meat products (these were fresh meat or minced meats) were classified as healthy foods. Of the total number of examined meat products, 41.5% were classified as grade E, 41% were classified as grade D, 13% received grade C, 1.6% received grade B, while only 2.9 % were classified as grade A. Sodium chloride was an especially burdensome parameter in 10 groups (77% of all products examined), while the presence of saturated fat was troublesome in 7 groups (54%) and high energy balance in 2 groups (15%). Serbian manufacturers are advised to implement new formulations and/or procedures in an effort to reduce these parameters in the meat products they produce.
Parallel to the great use of ultrasound in diagnostical purposes the interest for biological effects of ultrasound is growing every day. The present studies of the biological action of ultrasound concerned the cytogenetic investigations as well as those of animals and men. Taking into account that the extrapolation of results from animals to men is uncertain all data obtained in human population are of utmost importance. We tried to define the possible biological action of routine diagnostical ultrasound on foetoplacental unit. Women with physiological pregnancy were exposed to ultrasound during regular antenatal control-examinations in the 20th, 30th and 38th week of gestation. The follow-up concerned HPL levels in the serum 1 hour before and 1 hour after exposure to ultrasound. There was no significant difference in concentrations of the examined hormone in both blood samples.
The variability of 21 microsatellite loci was analyzed in order to estimate the genetic diversity of the Busa cattle breed. A total of 50 animals involved in the study were divided into two groups: Busa from eastern Herzegovina and Busa from western Herzegovina. The mean number of alleles per locus was 6.6. The average expected heterozygosities were 0.6885 and 0.6212 in the eastern and western populations, respectively. The observed heterozygosity values were 0.6579 and 0.6336, in eastern and western population, respectively. The degree of population differentiation (FST) ranged from 0.008 (for ILSTS006 locus) to 0.242 (for BM1818 locus), with a mean of 0.112. Cluster analysis showed that the two populations were clearly clustered into two distinct clades. This report represents the first genetic characterization of pure Busa cattle from Bosnia and Herzegovina. The obtained results are important for the future development of conservation and management strategies for this cattle breed.
The objective of this work was to investigate certain biochemical parameters in the blood of sheep in conditions of different intensity of parasitic infection with Strongyloides papillosus, and also after the therapy with albendazole. The research was carried out on the sheep of Wurtemberg breed (n = 30) in which there was determined low, medium and high intensity of parasitic infection with S. papillosus. The control group (n = 10) consisted of the sheep that were negative to the presence of the parasitic infection. The degree and type of changes were monitored by determining the concentration of glucose, total protein, albumin, Albumin/Globulin ratio, AST, urea, total bilirubin, calcium, phosphorus, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) total activity and isoenzyme distribution LDH1-5. On the basis of the obtained results it was concluded, through isoenzyme distribution of lactate dehydrogenase, that parasitic infection with S. papillosus can cause damage to the liver, heart muscle and lungs, while after the therapy with albendazole, the most affected organ is the liver. The concentration of glucose, total protein and albumin linearly decreased with the increase of intensity of the parasitic infection (p < 0,05), and after the therapy with albendazole, a drop in concentration of these parameters was at a statistically significantly higher level (p< 0,01). AST activity as well as the concentration of urea and total bilirubin grew linearly along with the intensity of the parasitic infection (p < 0,05). After the therapy with ABZ, AST activity and concentration of total bilirubin were at a statistically significantly higher level (p < 0,001), while urea concentration kept the same level as in the case of the parasitic infection. The values of calcium concentration (p > 0,05) as well as phosphorus (p < 0,05) linearly decreased with the parasitic infection intensity growth. Trend towards the decline of the concentration of these macroelements continues even after the therapy with albendazole (p < 0,001). Considering our previous research in the field of oxidative stress, a phenomenon that is fundamentally related to the changes determined in this work, we strongly recommend that besides antihelmintics, preparations with antioxidative properties should be used in antiparasitic protocols as well. <br><font color="red"><b> This article has been retracted. Abstract This study was conducted to evaluate the nutritional quality of two types of cheese prepared from bovine whey: Urda and Ricotta. Cheeses were examined for chemical parameters and their amino acids profile was determined. The results revealed that the chemical composition of the observed whey cheeses was highly significantly different (p<0.01) from each other. The amounts of dry matter, fat, protein, lactose, ash and salt were higher in Ricotta compared with Urda cheese samples. On the other hand, Urda contained more moisture, fat on a dry matter basis and moisture on a fat-free basis (79.59%, 27.50%, 84.27% versus 69.82%, 21.02%, 74.56%, respectively). Especially higher yield, salt in moisture content and energy values were observed in Ricotta cheese (5.93%, 3.12%, 145.99Kcal/100g versus 4.39%, 2.40%, 108.97Kcal/100g; Ricotta and Urda, respectively). Whey cheeses are a particularly good source of amino acids containing approximately - Ricotta: leucine (1.60g/100g), lysine (1.17g/100g), phenylalanine (0.78g/100g) and followed by threonine (0.77g/100g), while Urda contained leucine (0.80g/100g), lysine (0.45g/100g), threonine (0.68g/100g) and phenylalanine (0.31g/100g). Both cheese varieties contained glutamic and aspartic acid as the predominant non-essential amino acids (Ricotta: 3.91g/100g and 1.68g/100g versus Urda: 1.65g/100g and 0.80g/100g, respectively). Generally, from a nutritional point of view, the investigated whey cheeses could be considered as cheeses with low salt and fat content, as well as cheeses particularly abundant in branched chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine and valine). These results also emphasize their advantages as products that present a cost-effective way of dealing with whey as waste material.
Objective: This study estimated the prevalence of patients with aspirin exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD) in the total group of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CHRwNP), as well as a statistically significant difference between these two groups.Material and method: By analyzing 150 patients with diagnoses of CHRwNP, a subgroup of patients with intolerance to aspirin and other NSAIDs with asthma was isolated. Results: Out of 150 surveyed patients 57.3% had bronchial hyperreactivity, asthma was in 39.33% of patients and 25.3% had AERD.The average age of all examined patients was 52.83 ± 12.28 years, while those with AERD were 47.24 ± 13.35.The ratio was 1: 1.7 in favor of women. At the initial endoscopic examination, 63.16 % of patients were diagnosed with second degree and 36.84% with the third degree of polyps. After a year of therapy, we registered in 2.63% of patients first degree polyps in 60.53% second and in 36.84%third degree nasal polyps.During the year, with the first adequate therapy, 26.32% of patients required another round of a systemic corticosteroid therapy and 73.68% of the patients required three therapies. Conclusion:CHRwNP in AERD, is the most severe form of nasal polyps, with statistically significant presence of difficult forms of polyps, as well as the need for larger number of repeated rounds of systemic corticosteroids during one year and the worst result of treatment with a large number of residual polyps, as well as a statistically large number of decision on further surgical treatment.
