Comparative analysis of the effect of silver nanoparticle and silver nitrate on morphological and anatomical parameters of banana under in vitro conditions

Toxicological studies of manufactured nanomaterials are getting increasingly significant due to their continuous environmental release through various commercial products. Thus in the study, banana variety Grandnaine was cultured in rooting media with various concentrations of AgNPs and AgNO3 for studying its effect on shoot length, root length, length and width of the longest leaf, fresh weight and dry weight. Interestingly, all the morphological parameters analyzed were found not to have any significant variation under various treatments made. The anatomy of the roots of plants under different treatments showed slight increase in the number of metaxylem elements at higher concentrations of AgNO3 compared to control. But the effect of AgNPs on number of metaxylem elements was at par with that of the control. The lack of toxicity of AgNP on banana tissue cultured plants as confirmed in the study offers opportunities to explore the development of NP based formulations for the enhancement of productivity of economically important plants like banana.

Antibacterial properties of silver nanoparticles synthesized by marine Ochrobactrum sp.

Metal nanoparticle synthesis is an interesting area in nanotechnology due to their remarkable optical, magnetic, electrical, catalytic and biomedical properties, but there needs to develop clean, non-toxic and environmental friendly methods for the synthesis and assembly of nanoparticles. Biological agents in the form of microbes have emerged up as efficient candidates for nanoparticle synthesis due to their extreme versatility to synthesize diverse nanoparticles with varying size and shape. In the present study, an eco favorable method for the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles using marine bacterial isolate has been attempted. Very interestingly, molecular identification proved it as a strain of Ochrobactrum anhtropi. In addition, the isolate was found to have the potential to form silver nanoparticles intracellularly at room temperature within 24 h. The biosynthesized silver nanoparticles were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The UV-visible spectrum of the aqueous medium containing silver nanoparticles showed a peak at 450 nm corresponding to the plasmon absorbance of silver nanoparticles. The SEM and TEM micrographs revealed that the synthesized silver nanoparticles were spherical in shape with a size range from 38 nm - 85 nm. The silver nanoparticles synthesized by the isolate were also used to explore its antibacterial potential against pathogens like Salmonella Typhi, Salmonella Paratyphi, Vibrio cholerae and Staphylococcus aureus.

Extracellular Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles by Endophytic Bordetella SP. Isolated from Piper Nigrum and Its Antibacterial Activity Analysis

In the current study, various endophytic bacterial isolates from Piper nigrum were explored for its nanoparticle synthesizing property.Very interestingly, one of the isolate which is a strain of Bordetella sp. was found to have the ability to form silver nanoparticles at room temperature within 24 h by extracellular method.This was confirmed by the presence of a peak at 460 nm in the UV-Vis spectrum and such a result is the indication of surface plasmon resonance of silver nanoparticles.Further characterization of nanoparticles was carried out by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis.This confirmed the presence of silver nanoparticles with size less than 100 nm.The antibacterial potential of silver nanoparticles synthesized was also tested against pathogens like Salmonella paratyphi, Vibrio cholerae and Staphylococcus aureus.So the current study is the demonstration of an efficient synthesis of silver nanoparticles by Bordetella sp. and their potential as nanomedicine to manage pathogenic bacteria.

Effect of biofabricated gold nanoparticle-based antibiotic conjugates on minimum inhibitory concentration of bacterial isolates of clinical origin

Medical device related infections caused by coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are difficult to treat mainly because of the increased bacterial genetic tolerance to antibiotics and its notorious biofilm formation property which has been reported to be achieved through a wide range of mechanisms. Current study is the demonstration of persistent antibiotic delivering potential and broad spectrum of activity of nanoantibiotic combinations designed from gold nanoparticles in conjugation with known antimicrobial agents. Such formulations are of potential applications as surface engineering agents on medical devices to prevent device mediated infection caused by pathogens like CoNS. For this, highly stable gold nanoparticles fabricated by a Bacillus sp. were functionalized with ciprofloxacin, gentamycin, rifampicin, and vancomycin and these nanoparticle-antibiotic conjugates were studied for its effectiveness against selected CoNS like Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus haemolyticus. Very interestingly, the designed conjugates were identified to have a profound antibacterial efficiency compared to pure antibiotic and AuNPs. Thus, the result of the study is with highly significant medical applications as the test organisms used are emerging opportunistic pathogens.

Photocatalytic and antibacterial effects of silver nanoparticles fabricated by Bacillus subtilis SJ 15

Nanoparticle fabrication by microorganisms is highly remarkable due to its control over the size and shape. In the current study, Bacillus subtilis SJ 15 isolated from soil has been confirmed to have the potential to form silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using UV-visible spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, XRD, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. The synthesized AgNPs showed promising antimicrobial activity and excellent photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue. As the synthesized AgNPs were confirmed to have the potential to be exploited as a nanomedicine or as a catalytic agent for next generation dye degradation systems, the obtained result is highly remarkable.
