In photovoltaic power systems, both photovoltaic modules and switching-mode converters present nonlinear and time-variant characteristics, which result in a difficult control problem. This paper presents an in-depth analysis and modeling to discover the inherent features of a photovoltaic power system. The method of successive linearization simplifies the nonlinear problem back to the linear case. This paper also presents the use of Youla parameterization to design a stable control system for regulating the photovoltaic voltage. The experimental and simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented analysis, design, and implementation.

The photovoltaic (PV) effect is the generation of DC electricity from light. A PV cell, also commonly called a solar cell, is the fundamental component of a PV power system. Blocking diodes can be used, installed in series with the PV output string in order to block reverse currents. The PV effect can happen in many materials that absorb light and turn a portion of the energy into electricity. Photovoltaics are inherently an intermittent energy resource since the electricity production depends on the instantaneous environmental conditions. A fully controlled environment can provide the standard test conditions, variable irradiance levels, and regulated ambient temperatures. Outdoor evaluation of PV systems enables behavior of real PV arrays to be examined in natural sunlight. In some cases, the PV generator is directly coupled to the load without any power interface. Standalone PV systems supply power to local loads, and so are independent of the grid distribution network.

Improved I–V Tracer for Detecting and Analyzing Photovoltaic Power Generators

I–V tracing is a technology to realize and analyze photovoltaic power outputs and diagnose faulty or non-ideal factors. This paper proposes a new solution to achieve I–V tracing and improve the tracking speed and accuracy. The circuit configuration is based on a Cuk converter, which shows a high dynamic response according to the theoretical analysis. The main contribution lies in the enhanced modulation and control strategy. The adaptive step-size tracing algorithm is developed to achieve high tracking speed and high accuracy. One unique feature of the proposed solution is to recycle free solar energy during each test, which is feasible for practical outdoor instrumentation. The effectiveness is evaluated by simulation and experimental test.

Bridging the transition to DC distribution: A hybrid microgrid for residential apartments

The DC residential microgrid is a feasible solution to increase distribution efficiency and integrate distributed generation, storage, and energy-efficient loads. Although many modern residential loads can be directly fed from a DC supply, some loads such as white goods will continue to depend on AC in the immediate future. Therefore, a hybrid AC/DC microgrid forms an intermediate stage in the transition from AC to pure DC residential distribution. This paper proposes a hybrid architecture that enables this transition without having to reconfigure the entire system. A decentralized differential-droop based control is adopted to eliminate the need for fast and reliable communication links. The proposed "transitional" design enables smooth integration of renewables and storage in addition to incorporating smart grid services like plug-and-play operation, and demand response. A scalable design strategy for such a microgrid is detailed, and its merits demonstrated through simulations.

SPSA‐NC: simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation localization based on neighbor confidence

Abstract Accuracy is still the greatest challenge in the wireless sensor network localization efforts. Several diverse factors can give rise to localization errors. Modeling such diverse influencing factors to deliver a single, reasonably simple and practical solution is a difficult task. In order to address the problem of location inaccuracy, we propose a comparatively simple and ingenious approach, which is the simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA) localization engine. SPSA bypasses tedious modeling of the influencing factors where some of them are yet to be explored and random in nature. SPSA‐based localization estimates the non‐anchor node locations through minimizing the summation of estimated errors of all neighbors. However, the downside of SPSA is that it incurs errors in some specific relative neighborhood configurations often referred to as flip ambiguity. So, we further propose a solution to the flip ambiguity problem by implementing a constrained optimization with a penalty function method on the identified flip nodes. Most importantly, error propagation of the iterative localization algorithm is managed by incorporating a neighbor confidence matrix. We name this modified SPSA engine as simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation by neighbor confidence (SPSA‐NC). Experimental results show that SPSA‐NC offers significantly better localization accuracy than its state‐of‐the‐art competitors, namely, simulated annealing and the ordinary SPSA. Stacked-Switch Power Factor Correction Architecture

Two-stage power factor correction (PFC) architecture, consisting of a boost PFC front end and an isolated dc–dc converter, is widely used in ac–dc applications. However, the boost PFC front end loses zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) under high-line conditions, limiting its practical switching frequency. Consequently, a relatively large boost inductor and electromagnetic interference (EMI) filters are needed in the two-stage architecture, leading to a lower power density design. This article proposes a stacked-switch PFC architecture that allows all switches to achieve full-load-range ZVS at a universal input while reducing the component counts compared to the two-stage architecture. As a result, the stacked-switch architecture can operate efficiently at a much higher switching frequency than the two-stage architecture, allowing for higher power density and lower cost. Additionally, this architecture can be operated at a constant switching frequency, which is beneficial for simplifying the magnetics and controller design. A 150-W-universal-input prototype is built to verify the effectiveness of the stacked-switch PFC concept. The prototype measures 92.9% peak efficiency and 53.9-W/in

Single-Switch High Step-Up DC–DC Converter With Low and Steady Switch Voltage Stress

In this paper, a new high voltage gain step-up dc-dc converter is proposed for interfacing renewable power generation. The configuration optimally integrates both the coupled-inductor and switched-capacitor techniques to achieve an ultra-high step-up gain of voltage conversion with low voltage stress and high efficiency. It consists of a voltage boost unit, a passive clamp circuit, and a symmetrical voltage multiplier network. The structure becomes modular and extendable without adding any extra winding for ultra-high step-up voltage gain. The proposed topology not only reduces the voltage stress on the main switch but also maintains it steady for the entire duty cycle range. Furthermore, the reverse recovery issue of the diodes is alleviated through the leakage inductance of the coupled inductor. The operation principle and steady-state analysis are presented in detail. Experimental evaluation validates the claimed advantages and demonstrates a well-distributed efficiency curve and the peak of 96.70%.

Nested Formation Approach for Networked Microgrid Self-Healing in Islanded Mode

This paper proposes a novel nested restoration decision system (NRDS), which aims to minimize unused capacity of distributed generation (DG) for service restoration due to contingency during islanding stage. The proposed algorithm is based on the concept of nested microgrid formation, where the network control schemes are framed on a layered structure. The power-sharing strategy between neighboring microgrids in the network is from outer to inner microgrid loads, where the outermost microgrid exchanges power with utility grid only. The first stage refers to pre-fault scenario, which finds a solution for networked microgrid distributed generation as the initial setting. Furthermore, the second stage calculates additional redistribution requirements based on respective microgrid's deficiency using a solution index matrix. The proposed control has been evaluated on a networked microgrid system, while performing islanding.
