Spatial competition in retail markets: movie theaters

Retail markets are extremely important, but economists have few practical tools for analyzing the way dispersed buyers and sellers affect the properties of markets. I develop an econometric model of retail demand in which products are location specific and consumers have preferences over both geographic proximity and other store and product characteristics. The model uses data on the observed geographic distribution of consumers within a market to (1) help explain observed variation in market shares and (2) affect predicted substitution patterns between stores. Using data from the U.S. cinema industry, I use the estimated model to evaluate the form of consumer transport costs, the effect of a theater's price and quality choices on rivals, the effects of geographic differentiation, and the nature and extent of market power.

Rework in Civil Infrastructure Projects: Determination of Cost Predictors

Within Australia, civil engineering works continue to meet the insatiable demand for new infrastructure despite project complexity and cost and schedule overruns. A significant factor that can contribute to such overruns is rework; yet to date research into the root causes and consequential costs of rework in civil infrastructure projects has been limited. Using a questionnaire survey, rework costs and probable causes were obtained from 115 civil infrastructure projects. Stepwise multiple regression was then used to determine the significant variables that contributed to rework. The regression model revealed that the following five significant predictors accounted for 25% of the variance in total rework cost: (1) ineffective use of information technologies; (2) excessive client involvement in the project; (3) lack of clearly defined working procedures; (4) changes made at the request of the client; and (5) insufficient changes initiated by the contractor to improve quality. The findings also revealed that mean total rework costs were 10% of the contract value for the sample. Interestingly, the extent of rework experienced was significantly correlated with project cost and schedule growth (p<0.01). It is suggested that future work is required to determine the underlying factors that contribute to rework in civil infrastructure projects before effective preventive strategies can be identified.

Building capability in construction projects: a relationship‐based approach

Purpose The aim of this paper is to propose a way that the development of human social relationship capital can be identified and measured in a construction project environment. Design/methodology/approach Theory on the creation of social capital and consequent intellectual capital between parties to collaborative project procurement is explored. This is an exploratory study using grounded theory. Findings A proposed capability maturity model (CMM) is posited that can be used to measure improvement in developing human social capital, and assisting in project strategy formulation. Two recent Australian alliance projects are analysed using the model to gain insights into how the quality of relationships within project alliances can be assessed. Practical implications The model described in this paper may be used to measure performance or as an initial step towards strategising a change management plan based upon identifying a “current” situation. Originality/value Each alliance is unique and so its goals with regard to social capital will vary. Accordingly the results should be viewed accordingly. Work in this area using a CMM approach is relatively rare, and so this paper provides a novel way of measuring a complex concept such as social capital.

The study of welfare regimes in 'developed countries' has proved to be a particularly useful tool in understanding the connecting logic underlying different attributes of welfare states. Over the last decade the approach has generated a wide literature within the field of social policy and formed the basis for conceptual schemas used in empirical research examining the dynamic relationship between societal values, group interests and emerging welfare systems (Esping-Andersen 1999; Goodin et al. 1999). It has also generated its own share of criticism (Castles and Mitchell 1993; O'Connor, Orloff and Shaver 1999; Room 2000a).

Systemic Modelling of Design Error Causation in Social Infrastructure Projects

Design errors contribute significantly to cost and schedule growth in social infrastructure projects and to engineering failures, which can result in accidents and loss of life. Despite considerable research that has addressed their error causation they still remain prevalent in projects. This paper develops a conceptual model of the underlying conditions that contribute to design errors in social infrastructure projects. A systemic model of design error causation is then propagated. The research suggests that a multitude of strategies should be adopted in congruence to prevent design errors from occurring and so ensure that safety and project performance are ameliorated.

7 Poverty in Time

Abstract This chapter discusses the usefulness of a life history method for analysing poverty dynamics in developing country contexts, using findings from a study in the Kushtia district in Bangladesh. Among the advantages of using life history methodology in studies of poverty dynamics include a much longer and more detailed interview which can take place without boring the respondent, mainly because of the fascination we all have with life histories when they are discussed and depicted. A life history approach also allows for a different type of analysis to occur. Lifecycle patterns can be identified, patterns of complex causation emerge, and individual episodes of crisis, coping, and opportunity can be seen within the interrelated and wider context of national, community, and family trajectories.
