Values for the standard enthalpies of formation of triethylthioborane and several boron-sulphur heterocycles are reported. The energy of the boron sulphur bond is derived and strain energies in the heterocyclic systems estimated.
The binary gaseous-diffusion coefficients at 1 atm (101 325 Pa) pressure for the systems SnBr2–Ar (575–840 K) and Snl2–Ar (750–970 K) have been determined to be 6.35 × 10–6(T/273.15)1.69 m2 s–1 and 5.16 × 10–6(T/273.15)1.745 m2 s–1, respectively, by modified entrainment. An empirical estimation procedure has been validated using these results.
The standard heats of hydrolysis of phenylphosphorus dichloride and phenylphosphorus dibromide have been determined, and approximate standard heats of formation (–30 and –8, kcal. mole–1, respectively) calculated. The existence of phenylphosphorus chloride bromide (PhPClBr) has been confirmed.
Initial tests of a metal halide mercury lamp have been made on ultraviolet curable materials. The authors discuss the development of a simple model, and relate the iron partial pressure and the axis temperature of the discharge to the maintenance of the ultraviolet output of the lamp.
Two cases of atheromatous embolism of the small arteries of the stomach are reported. Insofar as has been ascertained, they are the first reported cases in the literature which presented symptoms of severe gastric bleeding and were found to have bleeding gastric ulcers on endoscopy. Both patients were successfully treated surgically, and their ulcers were found to be secondary to small arteriolar occlusions owing the atherosclerotic embolization. Awareness of clinicians as well as pathologists of this phenomenon in elderly males with symptoms of abdominal pain and other upper gastrointestinal symptoms unrelated to the ingestion of food is stressed. Pathophysiology of atherosclerotic emboli is also discussed.
