The objective of this work was to examine the incidence of equine influenza viruses in the equine population of an area of tropical Africa where equine influenza virus activity has recently been reported for the first time. A serological survey of sera from horses and donkeys from regions of Nigeria taken from 1990 to 1993 was carried out and the results obtained were com-pared with equine sera from Western Europe (Ireland). The sera were assayed for presence of antibodies by both haemagglutination inhibition (HI) and ELISA using a monoclonal antibody to the prototype H3 equine influenza virus, A/equine/Miami/1/63. The results showed that equine influenza was present in horses and donkeys in all regions of Nigeria.
Serum samples obtained from 107 Polo horses showing clinical signs of viral respiratory disease were tested for precipitating antibodies to adenovirus by agar gel precipitation test and counter-immunoelectrophoresis method. The results obtained demonstrate serological evidence of adenovirus infection in Polo horses in Nigeria. The counter-immunoelectrophoresis method was observed to be about 3 times more sensitive than the agar gel precipitation test with 19.3 vs 64.5%. It could thus be used to screen a large number of serum samples within a short period.
The effects of the various growth factors with regard to the nutritional physiology of zoophilic dermatophytes isolated from horses are reported. The optimum temperature, pH and growth period for the fungal isolates were found to be 30 degrees-35 degrees C, 5-6 and 7-12 days respectively while the carbon and nitrogen sources utilised by the organisms were sucrose, fructose, maltose, L-arginine and calcium nitrate. The use of these factors in preparation of efficacious fungicides used in the treatment of ringworm infections in man and animals is discussed.
