Abstract The aim of this contribution is to present a comprehensive approach to study the extent of hydrogen entry into a hot-dip-galvanized DP1000 steel, which is exposed to corrosive conditions. For this purpose, the Z100 coating was immersed in 5% sodium chloride solution at room temperature. The distribution of hydrogen and the spots of increased hydrogen entry were detected with scanning Kelvin probe (SKP) and scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPFM). Effects of hydrogen inserted during corrosion on the mechanical properties were determined in slow-strain rate tests (SSRT). Hydrogen quantification was achieved via thermal desorption mass spectrometry (TDMS), giving additional insights into the mobility of the inserted hydrogen within the steel by distinguishing diffusible and trapped hydrogen.

Abstract Indoor conditions have the greatest influence on the long-term storage of historical artefacts. The following text summarizes essential knowledge regarding the evaluation of the corrosivity of indoor atmospheres with an emphasis on the effect of the presence of volatile organic acids on corrosion of lead. It provides an overview of the information and resources necessary to decide whether lead storage conditions are safe and concludes by outlining a path to resolution if they are not.

Mechanisms of degradation of organic coatings

Abstract An overview of protection mechanisms of organic coatings for metallic constructions and products is given. The barrier effect of coatings and protection in local defects are discussed. Basic degradation mechanisms of organic coatings such as anodic and cathodic delamination in vicinity of defects, osmotic and cathodic blistering, mechanical stress assisted blistering, loss of adhesion and chalking are described. Appropriate laboratory tests are proposed for each degradation mode.
