Simulations of PDOP for GALILEO constellation,GPS constellation and combined constellation of GALILEO and GPS have been carried out respectively. It indicates that from the technical point of view, combined constellation of GALILEO and GPS might be more effective compared with either GALILEO or GPS constellation. It also shows that it is necessary to work out a composite receiver adaptive to combined constellation of GALILEO and GPS.

The Galileo satellite navigation system is being developed as a joint undertaking between the EC and ESA. Following a brief description of Galileo, and the status of the project today, this talk will look forward to what the existence of Galileo will mean for future satellite navigation systems, and specifically the benefits to users of satellite navigation.

Global navigation satellite system plays an important role in military and civil fields, providing global positioning, navigation and timing services in real time. Unfortunately, the services provided by single constellation or double constellations cannot meet the requirements of high-level navigation, and there are still some problems such as low positioning accuracy and low number of visible satellites at specific circumstances to be solved. In this paper, multi-GNSSs are constructed and their global positioning performance is analyzed with respect to static and dynamic users. Results show that with more constellations, the position dilution of precision is decreased, and the number of visible satellites and the positioning accuracy are improved, which reveals that compared with single constellation or double constellations, multi-GNSSs can obviously improve the positioning performance. The methodology proposed can serve as a technical reference for national integrated PNT systems.

Along with the application of GPS system in all of fields, the European Union (EU) also understands it is very important that it holds a satellite navigation system by itself. Through a long-time discussion, the informal agreement was subscribed by some countries in EU on 26th March 2002, the new satellite navigation system will be founded by EU, this project was named as Galileo system. China began to discuss with EU at the beginning of this project, for finding some opportunities to cooperate with EU on this project. Now, some agreements have been made, China-Europe Global Navigation Satellite System Technical Training and Cooperation Centre (CENC) was founded on 18th Sep. 2003 in Beijing. In this paper, some concepts will be introduced and analysed at the beginning of this project, including its design frame, its characteristics and its correlative technologies. Some basis will be provided for the future application of Galileo system.
