From international conference on the bases of the biological effects of ultravlolet radiation; Brno, Czechoslovakia (2 Oct Intracellular changes induced by various modes of interference were studied and possible interrelations between such changes and enhanced resistance were investigated. Experiments were conducted on the effects of amino acid prestarvation on the restoration steps after uv doses dimerizing about 0.15% of thymine in Escherichia coli. The starvation of cells for amino acids markedly enhanced the fractions of survivors in the excision proficient strains. Sedimentation profiles of DNA synthesized after uv irradiation were investigated by centrifugation in alkaline sucrose gradients in order to gain more information about the nature of the mechanism enabling cells to tolerate unexcised dimers. Progress is reported on the following research projects: photohydration of pyrimidine derivatives; thymine dimerization; uv-induced formation of pyrimidinyl radicals; formation of a coupled product by irradiation of 5- bromouracil derivatives; studies on pyrimidine adducts; molecular aggregates- puddle formation hypothesis of pyrimidine photodimerization; and topochemical studies of structures of dimers and of crystalline arrangements.
