Heart failure is characterized by impaired cardiac function that can lead to symptoms of congestion and/or hypoperfusion. There are many causes for heart failure and acute decompensation. Careful consideration of the underlying precipitant is crucial in the initial management to allow for targeted intervention. Heart failure can be seen in patients with both preserved ejection fraction and reduced ejection fraction. Distinguishing these two entities is essential to determining appropriate treatment. Diastolic heart failure is typically associated with long-standing hypertension in an older and predominantly female population. There are many potential causes of heart failure. However, treatment of the major risk factors associated with heart failure development reduces the likelihood of the development of heart failure. This chapter provides information on the diagnosis, treatment, prognosis for heart failure.
