The Center for Highway Research, in cooperation with the Texas Highway Department and the Federal Highway Administration, has been developing a stochastic input, micro-level, deterministic, step-through traffic simulation package under the Cooperative Highway Research Program. This paper describes the simulation package and its uses.

After analyzing the current urban traffic network model, this paper presents a new method for building the new 3D simulation model by using ArcGIS software. We developed the 2D and 3D models of topology network, traffic inspection, traffic control and management. The 2D model of traffic intersection and 3D model of urban road network based on DEM are described in detail. At last, the results of simulation are analyzed, which shows that the road model effectively provides special reference, geometrical model and logical model for other mathematic models in the simulation system, and provides storage-space and operation-space for various traffic behavior models and scheduler interface for diversified arithmetics. As compared with forepassed urban traffic model, these models give a more accurate and detailed description of the road network topology and geometry, and lay a good foundation for the traffic simulation models to describe the network traffic state more realistically.

Based on a comprehensive discussion of the development of GIS and traffic simulation, we designed the whole structure and functions of the traffic model, with special attention to design and development of the interface of data I/O and the database and the traffic map layer for the urban expressway traffic simulation model. The thought of integrating GIS and traffic simulation is put forward in this paper, and some functions of the simulation model have been realized, with the application field of traffic simulation widened.

THE REPORT DESCRIBES THE DEVELOPMENT, CALIBRATION AND VALIADATION OF THE NETWORK SIMULATION MODEL UTCS-1, DESIGNED TO SERVE AS A MECHANISM FOR EVALUATING ALTERNATIVE TRAFFIC NETWORK CONTROL STRATEGIES. THE UTCS-1 MODEL IS PROGRAMMED IN FORTRAN IV AND INCORPORATES THE FOLLOWING MAJOR FEATURES: (A) STOCHASTIC SIMULATION OF INDIVIDUAL VEHICLES BY TYPE, USING A SIMPLIFIED CAR-FOLLOWING MODEL WITH TIME- SCANNING PERIODS OF ONE SECOND; (B) CAPABILITY OF REPRESENTING A NETWORK OF, AT LEAST, 100 NODES; (C) A COMPLETE SET OF MEASURES OF EFFECTIVENESS OF THE TRAFFIC SYSTEM IN THE OUTPUT, (D) DETAILED TREATMENT OF PEDESTRIAN/VEHICLE INTERACTION, BUS TRAFFIC AND INTRA-LINK FRICTION SUCH AS ILLEGAL PARKING AND TAXICAB STOPPAGES; (E) SIMULATION OF ELECTRONIC SURVEILLANCE SYSTEMS; AND (F) REPLICATION OF ALL FORMS OF TRAFFIC CONTROLS INCLUDING REAL-TIME DYNAMIC SIGNAL CONTROL SYSTEMS. /AUTHOR/

A review of some of the recent work in the field of digital simulation is presented. The review includes a brief description of models that were developed to study (1) traffic control at intersections, (2) operation of merging areas of a freeway, and (3) traffic flow on a multi-lane freeway. A detailed description of a new freeway simulation model is presented. The model represents either a three or four lane freeway having either left-hand or right-hand ramps. Various combinations of passenger and commercial traffic can be generated in the computer. The model will be used in the study of traffic flow on a freeway. A second model for the study of rear-end collisions is also described. This model will be used to analyze the probability of an accident if an emergency braking situation occurs. This probability will be examined under various traffic volumes and mean velocities.
