Abstract:
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">With the acceleration of urbanization, developing public transportation is an important means to alleviate travel pressure and traffic congestion in cities. Work zones that occupy urban road resources affect normal vehicle operations, leading to reduced vehicle efficiency. Based on this, the paper conducts research on traffic flow modeling and simulation analysis for work zones in a vehicle-road coordination environment. Based on the Gipps model and the SCAT model, optimizations and improvements were made to the following and lane-changing rules for three types of vehicles: human-driven vehicles (HVs), autonomous and connected vehicles (CAVs), and buses. Using cellular automata theory, it constructs a running model suitable for mixed traffic flow vehicles in work zones. MATLAB software is utilized to simulate the operation process of vehicles under work zone scenarios, analyzing changes in traffic flow from two directions: road geometric conditions (speed limits) and traffic flow states (volume, vehicle type ratios, etc.). The study analyzes the impact of vehicle motion behavior on mixed traffic flow under different road scenarios, and examines the effect of work zones on time-space diagrams. It concludes that, at the same density, the higher the proportion of CAVs, the lower the probability of congestion. When the traffic flow is in a free-flow state, the speeds of vehicles under different speed limit conditions are not the same. When the traffic density is around 45 veh/km, the traffic volume reaches its maximum. At the same density, the higher the proportion of CAVs, the greater the overall traffic flow speed and the higher the capacity of the road section. This research provides support for the improvement of theories related to traffic flow operations in work zones under a vehicle-road coordination environment.</div></div>Keywords:

For many decades, transportation planners have been concerned with the study of highway capacity in order to keep the operation of existing roads and the design and construction of new roads functional with the consideration of the high number of vehicles that use them. The problems associated with costly major highways, especially in urban areas, greatly increases the need for better street and highway capacity information in order to increase efficient use of old and new facilities. The Highway Capacity Manual, published in 1965, emphasizes capacity aspects of freeways and special problems that need to be included such as weaving sections and ramp terminals. The manual also reviews other highway types such as urban arterials, downtown streets, rural multilane and two-lane roads, at-grade intersections, and bus transit operations. This article reviews the Highway Capacity Manual in detail by chapter and covers definitions, traffic characteristics, capacity and level of service, capacity and service volumes, at-grade intersections, weaving, ramps, freeways and other expressways, streets and highways without access control, and bus transit.

Roundabouts can provide substantial safety and traffic flow benefits compared with conventional intersections, but they often are opposed in the planning stage by local residents and elected officials who question their effectiveness. The purpose of the present study was to measure public opinion before and after construction of roundabouts in several communities and to evaluate the impact of roundabout construction on traffic flow. Three communities where stop-sign- or traffic-signal-controlled intersections were replaced with roundabouts in 2004 were the subjects of this research. Overall, 36 percent of drivers supported the roundabouts before construction compared with 50 percent shortly after construction. Roundabouts had very positive effects on traffic flow. Average intersection delays during peak hours at the three sites were reduced by 83-93 percent. Traffic congestion, as measured by the vehicle-to-capacity ratio, was reduced by 58-84 percent These results provide further evidence that roundabouts can improve traffic flow and that public support for roundabouts increases after they are in place.

The shift away from the use of a single mode of transportation for a shipment in favor of an intermodal approach is an important trend in contemporary freight transportation. One interesting aspect of the shift of truck traffic to railroad intermodal service is the corresponding impact on highway safety. Every highway trailer shifted to intermodal service represents a change in. combination truck traffic patterns on the highway system, as do intermodal services which capture new business before it ever reaches the highway system. The goal of this study was to identify potential. implications of intermodal transportation on highway safety. The research specifically attempts to quantify the effect of rail-highway intermodalism on truck vehicle-miles of travel and to assess the resulting effects on highway accidents. Impacts are calculated for the years 1992-1993 and, to aid policy decisions, for the year 2010.

Online traffic flow modeling is attracting more attention due to intelligent transport systems and technologies. The flow-density relation plays an important role in traffic flow modeling and provides a basic way to illustrate traffic flow behavior under different traffic flow and traffic density conditions. Until now the research effort has focused mainly on the shape of the relation. The time series of the relation has not been identified clearly, even though the time series of the relation reflects the upstream/downstream traffic conditions and should be considered in the traffic flow modeling. In this paper the flow-density relation is analyzed dynamically and interpreted as a states diagram. The dynamic flow-density relation is quantified by applying fuzzy logic. The quantified dynamic flow-density relation builds the basis for online application of a macroscopic traffic flow model. The new approach to online modeling of traffic flow applying the dynamic flow-density relation alleviates parameter calibration problems stemming from the static flow-density relation.
