    Experimental investigation on hole bearing behavior and failure mechanism of double‐lap hybrid composite/titanium bolted joints

    Abstract:
    Abstract In this paper, a new co‐curing process for hybrid titanium alloy foils into composite laminates was put forward. Meanwhile several pull‐out specimens were tested to obtained the bonding response between titanium alloy and composites. And the size of titanium alloy foils in double‐lap hybrid composite/titanium bolted joints were designed according to the response. Then these double‐lap bolted joints were fabricated and tested. The test results revealed that hole bearing responses of hybrid specimens were significantly better than composite specimens. Moreover, the hole bearing strengths of hybrid specimens with 33% titanium content were more 40% higher than composites specimens. And the degree of bearing strength enhancement exceeded the degree of weight gain of the specimen. Meanwhile, the hole damage morphologies of these double‐lap specimens were characterized. It could be found that the edge length had a significant effect on the failure form of the double‐lap bolted joints, and the area affected by hole failure could be significantly reduced by increasing the edge length appropriately. The structure of hybrid titanium alloy foils within a bolted joint area of composite laminates will provide a reference for improving hole bearing strength. Highlights A new co‐curing process for hybrid titanium alloy foils into composite laminates was created. Hole bearing strengths of hybrid composite/titanium bolted joints are higher than composite specimens. Increasing the edge length can effectively reduce the area of the hole failure affected zone.

    Titanium is commonly used as an implant material because of its strength, durability, density, and ability to passivated. Two titanium surfaces were compared, one produced by passivation following the ASTM F87 standard and one produced by treating coupons with piranha. The XPS spectra of the two treated titanium surfaces were collected with a Mg Kα (1253.6 eV) x-ray source operated at 300 W and 15 kV. This report includes XPS spectra of the elements associated with the treated titanium, which consisted of carbon, oxygen, and titanium. Significantly more titanium and oxygen were seen when comparing the piranha treated titanium to the passivated titanium, while significantly more carbon was present on the passivated titanium as compared to the piranha treated titanium.

    An experimental self-starting hydrodynamic gas bearing was designed, built, and tested. This bearing operates on the principle that the bearing is started and stopped hydrostatically by means of an air supply which is generated by the bearing itself. For this purpose, a portion of the self-starting bearing is executed as a herringbone grooved bearing, which performs as a pump, charging a reservoir during hydrodynamic operation of the bearing. The reservoir air supply generated by the herringbone bearing is used for hydrostatic operation of the bearing during starts and stops. Starting and stopping of the experimental bearing was demonstrated using the air supply generated by the herringbone bearing. An equation was derived for the mass flow rate of the herringbone bearing pump.

    The key effecting factors on deposition rate of titanium were analyzed and concluded.A special process was adopted,halogen and raw titanium was used as raw materials.First,titanium iodides was provided with raw titanium and halogen.Then the high purity titanium was deposited when the titanium iodides was decomposed under right conditions.The main influencing factors on deposition rate of titanium were the current density,the impurity of the raw titanium,the high valent titanium iodides and the vapor pressure of the titanium iodides.

    Load bearing capacity analysis of E-glass/epoxy composites reinforced with 3 D integrated multi-cellular weft-knitted spacer fabrics is focused in this paper. Three groups of composite varied in their cross-sectional shapes were prepared via vacuum resin transfer molding. From the experimental three-point bending test, it was found that the structural geometry has significant effect on mechanical performance and energy absorbability of the 3 D composites. Theoretically, based on FEM model, the composites stiffness matrix and Hashin-failure criteria were implemented in a simulated multi-scale model. Good compliance between the experimental and theoretical force-displacement curves suggested good compatibility of the proposed failure-based model.

    The experimental research of failure mechanism of stone columns made of coursed masonry of regular sandstone blocks and coursed masonry of irregular (freestone) blocks under concentric compression and the research of the performance of non-reinforced as well as CFRP-reinforced stone columns completed to-date pointed out the necessity of a different approach to the assessment of the load-bearing capacity, or residual load-bearing capacity, of masonry composed of stone blocks.
