The test of resistant on healthy Bombyx mori and Bombyx mori parasitized by lavar of Exorista sorbillans Wiedemann to Mie Can Ying showed that:(1) Mie Can Ying to healthy Bombyx mori and Bombyx mori parasitized by Lavar of Exorista sorbillans Wiedemann have a certain effect,and as the concentration increasing,the effect become high.(2) After adding Mie Can Ying of same concentration,healthy Bombyx mori's resistance was stronger than Bombyx mori parasitized by lavar of Exorista sorbillans Wiedemann,and after adding Mie Can Ying diluted one fiftieth of the original value,the mortality rate of healthy Bombyx mori only is 10%-15%,while the mortality rate of Bombyx mori parasitized by lavar of Exorista sorbillans Wiedemann is higher 35%.(3) The effect of Bombyx mori to Mie Can Ying adding from food,is higher than adding from body surface.Although Bombyx mori to Mie Can Ying produced a certain resistant,concentration of Mie Can Ying added is still not too high to avoid the death of Bombyx mori in sericulture production.

Prothoracicotropic hormone (Bombyx PTTH) of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, was extracted from adult heads. Bombyx PTTH is suggested to be a glycopeptide and consists of two essentially identical subunits. Amino acid sequencing and cDNA analysis revealed the whole amino acid sequence of the subunit, composed of 104-109 residues. Bombyx PTTH stimulated adult development in brainless Bombyx pupae at a dose of ca. 0.1 ng and also enhanced the release of ecdysone in vitro at a concentration of 10-11 M. Immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization showed that Bombyx PTTH was transcribed and translated in two pairs of dorso-lateral neurosecretory cells in the brain.

Several oxygenated sterols, e.g. ergosterol peroxide, 7-oxocholesterol and 7β-hydroxycholesterol, were identified from the fungus-infected carcass of silkworm, Bombyx cum Botryte. However, they were nontoxic to the silkworm Bombyx mori reared on a diet containing these oxygenated sterols (0.01%) together with sitosterol or cholesterol (0.1%).

Recently, much interest has been paid to the separation of silk produced by Bombyx mori from silk produced by other species and tracing the beginnings of silk cultivation from wild silk exploitation. In this paper, significant differences between silks from Bombyx mori and other species were found by microscopy and spectroscopy, such as morphology, secondary structure, and amino acid composition. For further accurate identification, a diagnostic antibody was designed by comparing the peptide sequences of silks produced by Bombyx mori and other species. The results of the noncompetitive indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) indicated that the antibody that showed good sensitivity and high specificity can definitely discern silk produced by Bombyx mori from silk produced by wild species. Thus, the antibody-based immunoassay has the potential to be a powerful tool for tracing the beginnings of silk cultivation. In addition, combining the sensitive, specific, and convenient ELISA technology with other conventional methods can provide more in-depth and accurate information for species identification.

Several cholestenols and cholestadienols were tested for ability to support the growth of the silkworm, Bombyx mori. 5α-Cholest-6-en-3β-ol completely fulfilled the insect sterol requirement, whereas 5α-cholest-8 (9)-en-3β-ol and (20Z)-5, 20 (22)-cholestadien-3β-ol were unable to sustain larval growth at all. The other sterols examined were partially effective as nutrients.

Adult eclosion of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, occurs during a specific period of the day under the control of eclosion hormone (EH). Bombyx EH was extracted from the pupal and adult brains (Fugo, et al., 1982), and also the embryos of B. mori (Chen, et al., 1986). In 1985, Bombyx EH was first isolated from the pharate adult heads of B. mori (Nagasawa, et al., 1985). Recently the entire amino acid sequence of Bombyx EH was determined as shown in Fig. 1 through the combination of sequencing the isolated Bombyx EH (Kono, et al., 1987) and cloning the Bombyx EH gene. A monoclonal antibody against the synthetic peptide corresponding to the carboxyl-terminal 13 amino acid residues of Bombyx EH was prepared (Kono, et al., in press).
