Abstract:
The necessity and significance of gas sensors are covered in this chapter, along with details on the volume and structure of exciting markets. The methods used for their deposition on the appropriate substrates are also presented, along with methodologies for the synthesis of sensitive materials. A greater knowledge of sensing's effects on the development of various synthesis concepts is offered. The definitions for the sensor and their analytical performance are also provided in this chapter. It discusses how interaction with ambient gases alters surface and free charge carrier concentration, as well as the factors affecting selenide semiconductivity. The most fascinating gas-sensitive materials are shown, along with their unique characteristics. Keywords:

Abstract The cyclenphosphine selenide is prepared by reaction of molecular selenium on cyclenphos-phorane. Its physicochemical properties are compared to those of oxygen and sulfur analogues.

Abstract The reaction of bis(trimethylsilyl) selenide with n-BuLi followed by alkylation with an R1X gave alkyl silyl selenides. The repetition of a similar one-pot operation with the second n-BuLi and R2X yielded unsymmetrical selenides (R1SeR2) in good yields. This one-pot procedure could be also applicable to the syntheses of selenolesters, selenolcarbonates, and a phosphinothioyl selenide.

Germyl-phosphine and -arsine both react with hydrogen selenide to form digermyl selenide. Evidence is provided by 1H n.m.r. spectroscopy that germyl hydrogen selenide is a reaction intermediate and that germylenebis-(germyl selenide), (GeH3Se)2GeH2, and possibly germylidynetris- and germanetetrayltetrakis-(germyl selenide), (GeH3Se)3GeH and (GeH3Se)4Ge are condensation products. The vibrational spectrum of digermyl selenide is discussed.

The reactions of the selenide U/sub 3/Se/sub 5/ with silver nitrate were analyzed. The principal reaction is very fast and yields only solids. Extended reaction periods produce the gas NO, a solid (which is a mixture of silver selenide, selenium, and silver), and the filtrate containing all the uranium in the form of uranyl salts. The formulas describing these reactions are given. This selenide assures a transition between the ionic uranium selenide and the covalent uranium selenide. The selenide U/sub 3/Se/sub 5/ represents an equimolecular combination of the selenides USe/sub 2/ and U/sub 2/Se/sub 3/. (J.S.R.)

Abstract The ratio of copper‐to‐selenium in cuprous selenide has been determined as function of the copper activity in the selenide at 435°C with the help of coulometric titrations. At 435°C the homogeneity range of cuprous selenide extends from a Cu/Se ratio of 1.998 to a value lower than 1.860. Analysis of the experimental data shows that the change of the chemical potential of copper by a change of the composition is only given by a change of concentration of the defect electrons or of the quasifree electrons. From these studies, the energy gap in coprous selenide is at least 0.37 eV.
