Abstract:
Miniaturization of electronic components has led to overheating, increasing power consumption and causing early circuit failures. Conventional heat dissipation methods are becoming inadequate due to limited surface area and higher short-circuit risks. This study presents a fast, low-cost, and scalable technique using 2D hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) coatings to enhance heat dissipation in commercial electronics. Inexpensive hBN layers, applied by drop casting or spray coating, boost thermal conductivity at IC surfaces from below 0.3 W/m-K to 260 W/m-K, resulting in over double the heat flux and convective heat transfer. This significantly reduces operating temperatures and power consumption, as demonstrated by a 17.4% reduction in a coated audio amplifier circuit board. Density functional theory indicates enhanced interaction between 2D hBN and packaging materials as a key factor. This approach promises substantial energy and cost savings for large-scale electronics without altering existing manufacturing processes. Keywords:

Cubic boron nitride (cBN) thin films, as artificially prepared materials, have excellent mechanical, thermal, electronic and optical properties, thus have potentially significant technological applications in cutting tools, high-temperature electronic devices, and protective coatings for optical elements. Cubic BN films have attracted worldwide attention since the early 1980s; however, a numbers of difficulties hindered their applications. In this paper, recent important achievements in cBN film preparation are reviewed, and perspectives for future study of cubic boron nitride film are presented.

High-speed grinding experiments of particle reinforcing titanium matrix composites ((TiC p + TiB w )/Ti-6Al-4V) were carried out with vitrified cubic boron nitride wheel and electroplated cubic boron nitride wheel, at the wheel speed ranged from 80 to 140 m/s. The cutting behavior, that is, grinding force, grinding temperature, specific grinding energy, and ground surface morphology, and grinding chips are analyzed. The results indicate that compared to the workpiece speed and the depth of cut, the wheel speed has a more significant influence on the grinding forces. The grinding temperature and specific grinding energy obtained with the vitrified cubic boron nitride wheel are always larger than those with the electroplated cubic boron nitride wheel. Based on the comprehensive consideration in terms of grinding force, grinding temperature, and specific grinding energy, the electroplated cubic boron nitride wheel is more suitable than vitrified cubic boron nitride wheel for high-speed grinding particle reinforcing titanium matrix composites. The removal of the reinforcements of particle reinforcing titanium matrix composites is mainly by means of pullout, fracture or crushing, micro-cracks, voids, and smearing. The segment chips containing the reinforcements are formed during high-speed grinding of particle reinforcing titanium matrix composites.
