    Abstract:
To explore the associations of parental smoking and alcohol consumption during the periconceptional period and their interactions with risk of congenital heart disease (CHD) in offspring.
Alcohol-free drinks are suggested as healthy alternatives for alcohol consumption. To achieve benefits, alcohol-free beverages must be consumed as a substitute for alcoholic beverages, not in addition. This study examined in a student sample (i) the frequency/quantity of alcohol(-free) consumption; (ii) the relationship between alcohol-free and alcohol consumption; (iii) alcohol-free drinks as substitution or in addition to alcoholic drinks; and (iv) possible gender differences.

A macaque having a relatively high daily consumption of alcohol during a 230-day period eliminated alcohol at a higher rate than did a macaque having a low daily consumption of alcohol and 2 control animals.

The possible effects of individual alcoholic beverages on blood pressure continue to arouse interest. There is a positive relationship between alcohol intake and blood pressure. The nature of this relationship still remains unresolved. Authors led studies where different patterns of drinking were assessed. First, different mechanisms are involved for generating hypertension when alcohol drinking. Vasoconstriction effects and modification of smooth muscles are well established factors of alcohol-induced hypertension. Calcium movements are also involved. Men and women are affected by hypertensive effects of excessive alcohol consumption. Drinking alcohol during meals is a probable protective factor of developing hypertension. Reducing alcohol consumption provokes a significant diminution of hypertension.

To investigate whether offspring sex ratio at birth (SRB) was associated with maternal breast cancer risk, the present case-control study and a meta-analysis of literature were done. A total of 389 female breast cancer patients who had at least one offspring participated in the study. From general population 356 healthy female were selected as a control group. Control subjects were frequency matched with patients according to age and number of offspring. Among control group, 1324 offspring (666 males, 658 females) and within families of the breast cancer patients 1326 offspring (648 males, 678 females) were identified. There was no difference for SRB between breast cancer patients and control subjects (P>0.05). Meta-analysis was performed using 7 eligible studies. There was significant heterogeneity between studies (P<0.05). In overall the SRB was negatively associated with the maternal breast cancer risk (OR=0.95; 95 % CI: 0.92-0.99, P=0.02). Menopausal status of the patients was not associated with offspring SRB (P=0.07). Further researches are needed to determine the possible association between gender of offspring and maternal breast cancer risk.
