Abstract:
The implementation of AI tools in education has become increasingly popular and brought transformative potential, particularly in the field of language education because of its powerful functions on designing immersive and personalized activities and offering real-time feedback. This study explores the role of AI tools in discourse analysis and the impact on enhancing bilingual skills among early childhood students. It investigates two key questions: (1) How do AI tools impact young childrens bilingual skills in early childhood classrooms? (2) How can discourse analysis of AI tools assist educators with bilingual teaching? A qualitative case study, including an in-depth interview with a bilingual educator, reveals insights into the effectiveness of AI tools in promoting bilingual language acquisition and engaging young learners in meaningful and enjoyable learning environment. Furthermore, the discourse analysis of AI tools offers immediate, actionable insights on each students academic performance, helping educators better understand the language learning process and the specific challenges students face. However, considerations and challenges of AI in education, such as privacy risks and misuse, still need to be considered. The findings of this study bridge the gap and highlight the potential for discourse analysis of AI tools in early childhood bilingual education. Further study can focus on exploring other AI tools in bilingual education and conducting long-term research with a large example size. Keywords:

Abstract In this article the authors present the results of a survey conducted with parents whose children are enrolled in dual language programs in Colorado. Furthermore, they describe why these parents were motivated to participate in a survey. Colorado is one of the states in which Ron Unz, a politician from California, is attempting to get voters to amend their state constitution to eliminate bilingual education as he did in both California and Arizona. Despite Unz's ignorance about what constitutes a bilingual program and his dismissal of dual language programs as too few in number, the results of the survey clearly indicate that both English- and Spanish-speaking parents freely choose these bilingual programs for their children, understand the model of dual language, and believe them to be effective. Although there were some differences between the English-speaking and Spanish-speaking parents' responses, particularly to open-ended questions, overall the survey findings dramatically counter bilingual opponents' claims that parents, particularly immigrant parents, do not want bilingual education for their children or that bilingual programs are forced upon them.

Fifty years after the Lau decision, dual-language programs face critical challenges, particularly a national teacher shortage, especially in bilingual programs representing less commonly taught languages like Mandarin Chinese. This study explores the workplace environments of 13 Mandarin Dual Language Bilingual Education (MDLBE) teachers in a diverse urban school district. Drawing on Freire's concept of humanization, Paris's cultural sustainment framework, and Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory, qualitative interviews reveal themes of outsiderness, coupled with a need for humanizing relationships with colleagues and leadership. Findings highlight the importance of culturally sustaining practices and systemic changes to foster inclusive, supportive environments, advocating for a transformation "Beyond Lau" to sustain dual-language programs.

This chapter provides an overview of how the federal government and states fund dual language bilingual education (DLBE) and English language learners (ELLs) in particular. To unpack this process, we start with a brief history of the salient legislation and the established procedures in place to fund DLBE. We then examine the variation in supplemental funding approaches, including the use of weights across states and the costs associated with funding DLBE and ELLs. Next, we discuss the trends in ELL supplemental funding, ELL classification, and the impact of ELL classification criteria on supplemental resource allocation. Finally, we end this chapter with several recommendations to improve the funding of DLBE programs.

The need for qualified and effective teachers to serve multilingual learners has been a focus of federal and state level policies in the United States since the bilingual education civil rights era. The recent surge of dual language bilingual education programs requires a qualified bilingual teacher force to meet this historical moment. This chapter reviews the literature guided by the following questions: What documentation do we have of a bilingual teacher shortage? What policies have led us to this historical moment in bilingual teacher education? What have been some short-term remedies for the bilingual teacher shortage? What bilingual teaching credential pathways exist and which are most promising? And, what are the implications of the bilingual teacher shortage and bilingual teacher pathways? This chapter makes the case for rejecting the narrow focus on a bilingual teacher shortage without reckoning with the sociohistorical and political context that has propagated the current need for more bilingual teachers.

Abstract This article describes a highly successful bilingual education program at Davis Bilingual Magnet School in Tucson, Arizona. After two decades of bilingual schooling in which children of all language backgrounds study content via both Spanish and English, Davis has developed strong community support through special attention to additive bilingualism/biliteracy and by creating a challenging and nurturing learning environment. By examining the school's long-term success from the perspectives of teachers, families, and dual language immersion students themselves, the study highlights successful bilingual schooling in a manner that acknowledges but goes beyond performance on standardized tests.

The promise of dual language education has spurred a movement in the field of bilingual education to shift from remedial programs to enrichment forms of bilingual education. Although research supports the effectiveness of such programs, many programs do not maintain their level of implementation and quickly revert to their original remedial form. This research looks at one elementary campus that has implemented a 2-way dual language program for more than a decade. Findings indicate that pedagogical equity, qualified bilingual teachers, active parent–home collaboration, and knowledgeable leadership contributed to the program's success.
