    The ammonia synthesis system was simulated with ASPEN PLUS and the influence of reaction temperature on the compression in synthesis loop and the energy consumption in heating and cooling process was discussed.The results indicated that the better the catalyst activity under low temperature the higher the ammonia concentration in synthesis converter and the lower the energy consumption in synthesis loop.

    Abstract Haber-Bosch process produces ammonia to provide food for over 5 billion people; however, it is currently required to reduce the large global CO 2 emissions. It is indispensable to devise heterogeneous catalysts for the synthesis of ammonia below 100‒150 °C to minimize the energy consumption of the process. Here we report metallic iron as a catalyst for ammonia synthesis at 100 °C in combination with an electron-donating material. The iron catalyst revealed that iron can exhibit a few hundred to several thousand times higher efficiency (turnover frequency) for ammonia synthesis than other transition metals used in highly active catalysts. Thermodynamic and vibrational spectroscopic analyses implied that the rate-determining step of ammonia synthesis on the iron catalyst is not N 2 cleavage, but the formation of subsequent N-Hn species such as NH, NH 2 and NH 3 , because of the facile cleavage of N 2 .

    The liquid level controlling system of ammonia cooler could not simultaneouly satisfy two production modes of the cold ammonia and the heat ammonia in the operation of synthetic ammonia plant.An auxiliary reacting regulator was added in the internal configuration.The results of application showed that the improved controlling system could be regulated stably in two production modes and could satisfy the needs of production process.

    Taking the typical three-tube co-current ammonia synthesis reactor in a middle-size ammonia synthesis plant of our country as an example, the mathematical models of the reactor were employed to simulate the reactor operation calculation. The calculated sensitive parameters of inlet temperature, outlet temperature, inlet vacant velocity and outlet ammonia molar fraction of the catalyst bed and the daily ammonia output can be compared with those measured in industrial production to simply and quickly determine the catalyst active (coefficients) during different production periods,which has an important significance to instruct industrial (ammonia) production and ammonia synthesis reactor design.
