Abstract:
In Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) the criterion for deciding the studies that must be performed is the annual tonnage of the chemical manufactured or imported into the EU. The annual tonnage may be considered as a surrogate for levels of human exposure but this does not take into account the physico-chemical properties and use patterns that determine exposure. Chemicals are classified using data from REACH under areas of health concern covering effects on the skin and eye; sensitisation; acute, repeated and prolonged systemic exposure; effects on genetic material; carcinogenicity; and reproduction and development. We analysed the mandated study lists under REACH for each annual tonnage band in terms of the information they provide on each of the areas of health concern. Using the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) REACH Registration data base of over 20,000 registered substances, we found that only 19% of registered substances have datasets on all areas of health concern. Information limited to acute exposure, sensitisation and genotoxicity was found for 62%. The analysis highlighted the shortfall of information mandated for substances in the lower tonnage bands. Deploying New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) at this lower tonnage band to assess health concerns which are currently not covered by REACH, such as repeat and extended exposure and carcinogenicity, would provide additional information and would be a way for registrants and regulators to gain experience in the use of NAMs. There are currently projects in Europe aiming to develop NAM-based assessment frameworks and they could find their first use in assessing low tonnage chemicals once confidence has been gained by their evaluation with data rich chemicals. Keywords:

This article focuses on the size of tonnage as an impact on the size of wooden components in a ship. It is based on a list of 66 tonnages, elaborated via a methodology employing three methods to determine tonnage (reconstruction of the hull lines, the tonnage formula, and the weight of the cargo). This list notes the thickness of the planking and of the moulded side of the frames. However, the article also explores further factors that are involved, particularly the evolution of the architectural type.

AbstrackThis research was conducted month december 2014 - february 2015 in the laboratory of Fishing boat. The research purpose is to design an application that is easy to use in the calculation of tonnage of fishing boat, namely gross tonnage (GT) and net tonnage (NT). The method used is descriptive method. The results showed that with this application can determine the size of the tonnage of the boat is gross tonnage (GT) and net tonnage (NT) are approaching the actual size easily, quickly and clearly. After validating the data from department of fisheries and marine, obtained difference calculation accuracy by 5 %, so the application can be applied in the calculation tonnage fishing boat. The application can be used for data collection boat owners and taxation. The application can be used by fishermen, government and student fisheries. Keywords : Application, Tonnage, Fishing boats

Managing the tonnage measurement program offers the Marine Safety Center (MSC) some unique challenges and opportunities. Tonnage measurement is the process of assigning gross and net tonnage and registered dimensions to vessels of all sizes and its impact is far reaching. Though tonnage measurement today has much in common with what admeasurers have done for centuries, the tools of the trade and complexity of measurement rules and systems have undergone many changes, especially in the last 40 years. This article will examine where we have been and where we are going today with the tonnage measurement program.

The shipping industry can be explained by a growing process of concentration and centralization of tonnage. A few largest shipping company control a great deal of shipping tonnage in the total tonnage through the process of concentration and centralization of tonnage in shipping over time. It confirms that a decreasing number of operators take an increasing quantity of tonnage in the total tonnage. Thus, the extremely dualistic structure (extremely unequal distribution of tonnage) are shown not only in the shipping industry in a given country but also in liner shipping in the world In this paper, the two countries, that is, Korea and Egypt, are compared considering the absolute size of tonnage and shipping policy in tenn., of concentration and centralization of tonnage in shipping. In order to measure the degree of concentration of tonnage in shipping, the quantitative measurements; the Lorenz curve and Gini coefficient are introduced. But it should be supplemented with the qualitative measures of tonnage in a given country.

During the eighteenth century various methods existed for obtaining shipping tonnages; Most official records of shipping throughout this period record a vessel's “registered tonnage” which was the figure which appeared in the vessel's certificate of registration. This registered tonnage was less than a vessel's “measured tonnage.” The latter was the basis for building, buying, and selling vessels and was computed by means of a given formula. Registered tonnage was then estimated at roughly two thirds of measured tonnage and the figure rounded down to the nearest large whole number. This practice was encouraged by ships' captains and ship owners who wanted to minimize lighthouse and port duties that were based on tonnages. Thus only when the registration of measured tonnages became compulsory did shipping tonnages in the records become reasonably accurate.

This paper develops the relationship between the practical tonnage capacity of a waterway and its maximum tonnage capacity. The relationship is found to be an approximate ratio of 1 to 4, that is, the PTC of a waterway is approximately 25% of its MTC. The maximum tonnage capacity is computable for all waterways. This tonnage is described as the optimum amount that can pass a lock in 365 days if each time the lock is operated, regardless of direction. Its useable chamber dimensions are completely occupied by a tow with its barges loaded to the maximum draft permitted by the waterway, each lockage is performed in the minimum possible time, and the operation continues for 24 hr each day. Waterways with restrictions such as narrow channels requiring passing places were found to have relatively lower practical tonnage capacity than the waterways developed on the Illinois and Ohio Rivers. The findings are suitable for application to studies of new waterways or the improvement of existing ones.
