By definition, people are reticent or even unwilling to talk about taboo subjects. Because subjects like sexuality, health, and violence are taboo in most cultures, important information on each of these subjects can be difficult to obtain. Are peer produced knowledge bases like Wikipedia a promising approach for providing people with information on taboo subjects? With its reliance on volunteers who might also be averse to taboo, can the peer production model produce high-quality information on taboo subjects? In this paper, we seek to understand the role of taboo in knowledge bases produced by volunteers. We do so by developing a novel computational approach to identify taboo subjects and by using this method to identify a set of articles on taboo subjects in English Wikipedia. We find that articles on taboo subjects are more popular than non-taboo articles and that they are frequently vandalized. Despite frequent vandalism attacks, we also find that taboo articles are higher quality than non-taboo articles. We hypothesize that stigmatizing societal attitudes will lead contributors to taboo subjects to seek to be less identifiable. Although our results are consistent with this proposal in several ways, we surprisingly find that contributors make themselves more identifiable in others.

Abstract:The title of this study is English Taboo Words. Taboo is something that is considered prohibited to be said or done in certain communities or cultures. As taboo is related to culture, then taboo in each country is different as the culture in each country is different too. This study found out that taboo in western countries, for example America, tends to relate with identity and sex while taboo in eastern countries tend to relate with belief/ myth. This finding is apparently because America is a country that valuably prefer knowledge to myth and is a developed and free country, so the taboos in this country are almost like swear words. They use taboo words to show which groups are superior and inferior, to degrade other people, and to humiliate them by mentioning their race or sex.

The purpose of this research is to analyze taboo for taboo strategy and factors that influence in translating taboo words in the novel Where There's Smoke into Indonesian. The data for this research are taboo words in the novel Where There's Smoke and its translation in Indonesian entitled Pencarian which uses the taboo for taboo strategy in its translation. The taboo for taboo strategy maintains taboo from the source language (SL) into the target language (TL). Data collection techniques are carried out by reading and taking notes. The data analysis in this research is based on Davoodi’s theory (2009). From the research results, it was found that the taboo for taboo strategy can translate taboo words at the same taboo level as SL and taboo for taboo strategy with a lower taboo level than SL. Factors that influence the taboo for taboo strategy are the use of the same function of taboo words between SL and TL, the message and meaning conveyed are the same, the difference language systems of SL and TL, the translator's understanding of the culture of SL, the readers of the target text, translator's sociolinguistic abilities, and editor’s role.

Abstract Chapter 2 establishes a discursive analysis methodology for identifying and measuring a taboo. How do we locate the presence and influence of a taboo in respect to International Relations? How do the specific characteristics of a taboo shape what we look for in respect of that taboo’s identification? What types of evidence indicate that an actor adheres to a taboo? How does the rejection of a compliance-centric approach alter current methods for analysing taboos? In answering these questions, the chapter presents a critical analysis of Nina Tannenwald’s research in particular, which contextualizes her claims within the context of the new model of taboo proposed within the book.

For this paper, we studied the use of linguistic taboo words in Saudi Arabian society. Three main taboo topics were addressed in the current study: the use of taboo words in social contexts, the use of taboo sex words, and the use of taboo swear words. A randomly chosen sample of 253 Saudi females from two different age groups participated in the study. A closed-ended multiple-choice questionnaire was used to collect the data. The findings provided considerable insights into the behavior of Saudi society. Saudi society rarely uses taboo words. The strategy people use to avoid using taboo language is euphemism; sex topics, for instance, which may be overtly discussed in some cultures, are prohibited in Saudi culture. The findings also revealed that Saudi society is too sensitive to the use of swear words because they are culturally and religiously prohibited, though they were occasionally used by younger female participants. In general, this study showed that although the Saudi society is a conservative society, the younger generations of Saudi females are moving slowly toward making linguistic changes in society.
