    Abstract:
This study purposes an in situ testing method on quality assessment of soil improvement. Factual drilling data includes the spatial distribution and in situ strength of untreated and treated soil along three different drillholes measured by on-site drilling monitoring method. These factual drilling data can characterize the degree of soil improvement by penetration injection with permeable polyurethane. Result from on-site drilling monitoring shows that the linear zones represent constant drilling speeds shown in the plot of drill bit advancement vs. net drilling time, which indicates the spatial distributions of soil profile. The soil profile at the study site is composed of four layers, which includes fill, untreated silty clay, treated silty clay, and mucky soil. The results of soil profile are verified by the parallel site loggings. The constant drilling speeds profile the coring-resistant strength of drilled soils. By comparing with the untreated silty clay, the constant drilling speeds of treated silty clay have been decreased by 13.0–62.8%. Two drilling-speed-based indices of 61.2% and 65.6% are proposed to assess the decreased average drilling speed and the increased in situ strength of treated silty clay. Laboratory tests, i.e. uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) test, have been performed with core sample to investigate and characterize in situ strength by comparing that with drilling speeds. Results show that the average predicted strengths of treated silty clay are 2.4–6.9 times higher than the average measured strength of untreated silty clay. The UCS-based indices of 374.5% and 344.2% verified the quality assessment (QA) results by this new in situ method. This method provides a cost-effective tool for quality assessment of soil improvement by utilizing the digital drilling data.

Abstract FORASLIM 1 is an integrated Drilling and Coring system dedicated to the construction of wells with small diameter to depths of 3500m. The objective is to provide a high cost reduction of exploration drilling in remote onshore areas with the following requirements: Environmental impact minimisationDrilling EfficiencyDrilling safety(No reduction in well control and safety standards)Complete Geological Evaluation In order to reach these objectives a fit for purpose drilling system has been developed (ref. 1). The Slim Hole rig FORASLIM 1 has been commissioned in April 1994. The first drilling campaign was completed by ELF Gabon and is related in reference 2. The present paper relates the experience acquired with Shell during the drilling of three wells in Romania under an integrated services contract managed by the drilling contractor Forasol. This experience concerns the drilling and coring processes, and the quality of the geological evaluation obtained.

Because of its high efficiency and good coring quality, the wire-line coring technology widely applied to small diameter solid mineral drilling projects. It is,however, little used in large-diameter deep-hole drilling in sedimentary strata.Considering the advantages and disadvantages of wire-line core drilling and oil drilling technology, this paper proposes the idea of increasing the gap between hole and drill tools and using the oil drilling technique with large pump capacity and high return speed, and the wire-line coring two-in-one technology. From production test at a 2630m depth salt mine(geothermal) exploration hole in the Yewu sag basin of Henan Province, this paper analyzes the main problems during the test following the idea aforementioned, and then proposes detailed measures to solve them. The test proves that the wire-line coring technology used in large-diameter drilling is feasible, and exhibits its merits such as low cost, safety and reliability.Meanwhile, increasing the pump capacity and enlarging the gap between hole and drill tools can avoid the drilling cuttings crushing repeatedly, thus the drilling efficiency can be highly improved.

The drill hole for the Cajon Pass Scientific Drilling Project was designed uniquely to accomplish specific science experiments. Special consideration was given to drilling practices for hole size, spot coring, deviation from the vertical, chemical and physical properties of the drilling fluids and pipe lubricants, monitoring mud logging and drilling parameters, and procedures for handling of cores and cuttings samples. Phase I of drilling reached a depth of 2115 m.

The drilling technology of HC-15 large-diameter down the hole hammer(DTH) of annular coring drilling system is effective to improve the drilling efficiency and to solve the drilling problem of large-diameter pile hole in hard rock. This drilling system adopts distribution pot instead of air distribution case,so the structure of this new type is simple to made, easy to disassemble with good sealing performance.

Abstract This paper presents the experience gained with the use of special large diameter aluminum drillpipes (ADP) in the Atlantic Ocean, Norwegian Sea. Gulf of Mexico and Gibraltar Straight. The maximum water depth achieved was 1616 m. Both rotary and down hole motor drilling and coring techniques have been used for drilling and coring in variety of formations – from soil till hard rocks. Various types of retrievable tools are available to offer a spectrum of possibilities.

Abstract This technical note presents a light drill specially designed for coring in permafrost. The drill was improved over several years at Université Laval's Centre d'études nordiques. More efficient than the conventional CRREL coring kit, the equipment allows total‐length recovery of cores 10 cm in diameter nearly without alteration, and works in most kinds of frozen soils. Drilling is possible to 7 m using a two to three‐person operating crew. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

At present, any in-situ drilling and coring work of gas hydrate in deep seas depends upon the ODP (Ocean Drilling Program) and DSDP (Deep Sea Drilling Project)special drilling technique by making use of ships, that is to say,a parent ship puts down a rod hundreds or thousands of meters long to the seabed to carry out drilling of 500~1 000 m in length, and then different PCSs(pressure coring samplers) and PTCSs(pressure-temperature coring samplers)are used to collect samples.Such technique needs huge funds. Our new method is to fix the pressure-temperature corers directly on the seabed and realize the in-situ hi-fi sample collection.
