This paper presents a new approach to pyschological intervention in educational settings, especially in the school. It suggests an integration between psychoanalytic self psychology and strategic therapy. The theoretical discussion is followed by case presentations which demonstrate (a) the need for collaboration between the different systems bearing a significant influence upon the life of the child; and (b) the relevant issues, or meeting points, between psychoanalytic self psychology and strategic therapy.

Understanding around school refusal behaviour has significantly changed over time, from beliefs that it stemmed from a phobia, to more recent views that the behaviour serves a function for the child or young person. These changes run in parallel to a dominant medicalised and within-child view of school refusal, which has subsequently impacted on the interventions used by professionals. This article looks at the evidence base around the most commonly used intervention, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) (Maynard et al., 2018), to determine whether its extensive use is validated. The use of this intervention in educational psychology practice is explored, with consideration for the merits of finding a “gold standard” intervention in comparison to adopting a more individualised approach. To support a more individualised and systemic approach, Nuttall and Woods’ (2013) “Ecological Model of Successful Reintegration” is explored in relation to educational psychology practice.

This work sets out historical information about the development of Latin American psychology over the base of education. It reviews the contribution from education to Latin American psychology, and especially, the creation of experimental psychology laboratories in schools and educational and psychopedagogical institutions, where experimental pedagogy laboratories operate, which were a relevant antecedent for psychology's institutionalization through the creation of Programs and Professional Schools.

This paper investigates the extent to which psychological theory and research has contributed to how bullying is managed within schools. Teachers' awareness of the behaviours that constitute bullying, gender differences leading to identification difficulties, and low levels of reporting are discussed as plausible reasons for teachers' low intervention rates. Pupils' attitudes towards and responses to bullying are examined within the contexts of self‐efficacy, self‐acceptance and level of problem‐solving skill. Subsequent anti‐bullying interventions focusing on these aspects are explored and the importance of a whole‐school approach emphasised.
