    Abstract:
    Forests are essential for the provision of water, financial resources, food, and carbon, and offer immense ecosystem service values. The accurate, quantitative, and objective evaluation of forest ecosystem service (FES) values can help uncover methods for realizing ecological product value, which in turn supports forest conservation and ecological benefit enhancement. In China, FES valuation methods are diverse and tailored to specific objectives, encompassing matter quantity assessment, value quantity assessment, energy value analysis, and landscape ecological modeling methods. The “Forest Ecosystem Service Function Assessment Specification” guideline plays a crucial role in fostering standardized valuation. Carbon-related ecosystem services have been increasingly studied in China; however, valuation challenges remain, including data accuracy, the double counting of ecosystem services, methodological limitations, and the incomplete assessment of non-use values. Regarding value realization, the development of payment for ecosystem services (PES), ecological product benefit trading (EPBT), ecological premiums, and ecological industries has seen gradual progresses in recent years. However, realization approaches still depend on government support, and the establishment of market-oriented strategies requires further reinforcement. Enhancing FES valuation necessitates the integration of interdisciplinary and multi-method approaches, as well as the creation of an accounting and assessment mechanism. Realization approaches must not only be continuously expanded but also consistently innovated over time. It is essential to consider the impact of market development on FES valuation; establish robust realization approaches; reinforce promotional and guarantee mechanisms; and increase the efficacy of policy management.

    Abstract Ecosystem services are the benefits people obtain from ecosystems, including provisioning, regulating, supporting, and cultural services. The Meta-analysis of this seminar was reviewed to identify, describe, and choose an appropriate ecosystem valuation method. Four major and nine sub-ecosystem services valuation methods were reviewed from scientific literature sources. Direct market-valuation methods are used to estimate ecosystem services via the use of direct market prices and production functions, indirect market valuation methods are used to estimate when direct markets for many ecosystem goods and services do not exist, direct market prices are missing, and stated preference valuation methods are used when no market prices are available, indirect market valuation methods are not possible, and the change in ecosystem services is hypothetical. The indirect market valuation methods can be used to estimate economic values for all types of ecosystem services. Ecosystem service modeling is used in integrating all the spatial and temporal dynamics of ecosystem services. The strength and limitations of each ecosystem services valuations method are summarized to know and choose appropriate valuation methods. The analysis shows different valuation methods exist and have been applied to estimate the values of different ecosystem services, but their appropriateness under specific conditions or limitations is not uniform. Thus, further study on the pros and cons of valuation methods will be needed to choose appropriate ecosystem valuation methods.

    The study of ecosystem services and their valuation is a hot-pot issue in ecology,which plays an important role in boosting sustainable ecosystem management.At present,there are no systemic theories in ecosystem services classification and valuation,and most domestic studies are focused on the repeated estimation of some prevalent services by using established methods,without any pertinence and exploration.Based on our previous studies and related literatures,this paper put forward a new classification system of ecosystem services,and named three new concepts,i.e.,top-drawer ecosystem services,theoretical value,and actual value.A case study on the Sangyang wetland of Wenzhou further illustrated these classification system and new concepts.It is suggested that if the main purpose of ecosystem services study is to serve decision-making,it is no need to evaluate all the ecosystem services of a region accurately and roundly,while the valuation of several top-drawer ecosystem services is sufficient.The comparison of theoretical and actual values could help to analyze the degree of ecosystem degeneration and evaluate the process of ecological restoration.
