This chapter outlines the history of the Don Juan legend from 1630 to 1824. It suggests that the differences between versions of Don Juan argue for a more generous understanding of what constitutes a version of the legend while similarities between versions cumulatively build up a picture of a hypothetical traditional form of the legend. This chapter questions the popularity of the legend and provides explanations other than the jesting or ignorant theory that it maintained its success due to a pact with the devil.

Wang Kai-yun's study of scripture possesses the characteristics of breakthrough legend to return scripture, which has gone through the process from legend to scripture. Wang Kai-yun in his early age worships legend. He began to return to scripture when he started the works of Ram and Legend. The return of scripture from legend in Ram represented a departure from He Xiu's idea of decodes, as best demonstrated by his viewpoint of disaster. The other feature is his questioning and surpassing to the legend. The motivation of authoring Spring-fall Legend is to show the difference of two versions of legends and his spirit of returning to scripture.

I propose that certain legends may be understood as ‘metatradition’, that is, as traditional lore that takes tradition as its theme, and examine how ML 6045: Drinking Cup Stolen from the Fairies in particular models tactics for approaching the past and what it has to offer in transitional times. I compare the representations of tradition in this legend to those put forth in the scholarship surrounding the legend, and in folk-narrative scholarship more generally, and conclude by suggesting that the ‘critique of tradition’ is itself traditional, and that we should look to legend as we think critically about tradition.

The article compares the legend of Berta and Milone and the childhood of Orlando as preserved in the Italian Geste Francor and the legend of Aleramo and of Matilde di Canossa’s birth. These legends tell a very similar story and their first certain attestations are approximately contemporary. This means they probably were developed together. The article asserts the original legend was the legend of Orlando. The legend of Orlando would be itself an Italian elaboration of an Old-French chanson de geste concerning Berta and Milone’s clandestine love.

It is said that there lived a chief called Yao in ancient China about 4000 years ago who abdicated his throne to Shun, and the legend of Shun and Xiang was an important part of the story. The legend of Shun and his family is similar to such stories of two brothers. This essay gives a comparison with them in order to understand the emergence, changes and nature of the legend and tries to prove its truthfulness from the angel of folk literature.
