An N-resolution proof is a resolution proof in which the resolution rule is restricted: One clause to which it is applied must only consist of negative literals. N-resolution is complete. ([8], p. 109,

The lack of a precise definition for "ultra-high resolution chromatography and the common confusion of resolution with plate number is discussed. Examples are given in which high resolution separations are achieved through a combination of chemical and physical insights. Cases in which plate number, relative retention and control of capacity are the dominat factors in producing high, practical resolution are discussed.

By using the HF—HCl—HNO3 system with high-pressure closed digestion, which can effectively dissolved cobalt-rich crust samples, fifty major and minor elements in cobalt-rich crusts can be determined by means of inductively coupled plasma Optical Emission spectrometry(ICP-OES)and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS).The detection limit of this method is 2~40μg·g-1 by using ICP-OES and 6~80ng·g-1 by using ICP-MS.The validation of the method with cobalt-rich crust references GBW07337,GBW07338and GBW07339shows that both the relative standard deviation(RSD)and the relative error(RE)are less than 5%.Applying to the determination of cobalt-rich crust samples collected from the China Pacific Area, the precision(RSD,n=6)can be less than 5%and the recoveries are 90.0%~108%.Thus,this method can be applicable to the analysis of a large number of cobalt-rich crust samples.

Investigations were directed at the development of a He inductively coupled plasma (ICP) ionisation source for inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Earlier results, exhibiting simpler plasma gas mass spectral features coupled with higher sensitivities for high ionisation energy elements, indicated promise for this source as a supplement to the conventional Ar ICP ion source. However, existence of an intense plasma-sampler cone discharge and the possible need for modifications of the conventional ICP-MS interface may pose major impediments to the use of the He ICP as an atomic mass spectrometry ion source. Investigation of these problems involved measurements of ion energies in the He ICP and theoretical consideration of the interface gas flow dynamics with a He plasma. Empirical and theoretical results indicate promise for the ultimate compatibility of this source with existing ICP-MS designs.

Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) can be used to detect metal elements existing in samples. Because we are not capable of conducting ICP-MS on our own, we must seek help from our advisors. This protocol is a general description of our actions.
