The objective was to discuss the evolution of the real incidence of breast cancer. Observed incidence as calculated by cancer registries differs from the real incidence because of the artifacts brought by diagnostic procedures and case collection. Age-period-cohort models were applied to nearly 11,200 incident breast cancers collected by the Cancer Registry of Isère from 1983 to 2002 in women aged 30-84. We took into account prior knowledge and assumptions concerning the evolution of real incidence, diagnostic procedures, and collection of cases. In the age group 30-49, no real incidence increase was seen if we assume that diagnostic procedures and collection of cases were not impaired. In women aged 50-69, an increase of real incidence and intensive screening could explain the increase of observed incidence but exact quantifications are difficult. At most, the increase due to screening would reach 50%. In women aged 70-84, no real incidence increase was suspected if we assume that changes in clinical practices and screening led to more breast cancer cases collected.
Background Incidental findings (IFs) are commonly seen in staging rectal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. Their prevalence and clinical significance have not been previously documented. Purpose To assess the prevalence, clinical significance, and outcomes of incidental findings in MRI scans performed for the staging of rectal cancer. Material and Methods A retrospective study was performed at a tertiary colorectal imaging institution. Consecutive MRI rectal staging scans with correlative pathology confirmed primary rectal cancer between March 2014 and March 2021 were identified. The respective imaging reports were reviewed for IFs, which were classified as high, moderate, and low, according to their clinical significance. Medical records were reviewed to assess the outcomes of the highly significant IFs. Results There were 266 eligible patients (97 women; mean age = 64.2 years) during the study period. A total of 120 (45%) patients did not have any IFs. A total of 238 IFs in 146 (55%) patients were found. There were 21 (9%) IFs of high clinical significance, 122 (51%) of moderate clinical significance, and 95 (40%) of low clinical significance. The prostate and uterus had the most IFs of high clinical significance, two of which were subsequently pathology confirmed as prostate adenocarcinomas. Conclusion IFs were seen in more than half of the staging MRI scans in rectal cancer but less than 10% of these were of high clinical significance. The results of this study highlight the range of potential IFs and can guide future research assessing the potential impact of these IFs on patients and the healthcare system.

This study was planned and conducted to determine the chocolate consumption habits of prospective teachers. The study population was comprised of students attending the Faculty of Education at Gazi University in Ankara and the sample consisted of 251 prospective teachers selected with simple random sampling. 96.4 % and 3.6 % of the prospective teachers were aged 19-35 and 25-30, respectively. In the study, 91.1 % of the female prospective teachers and 75.3 % of the male prospective teachers agreed with the statement chocolate consumption is good for cardiovascular diseases, while 4.1 % of the female prospective teachers and 8.6 % of the male prospective teachers disagreed. 77.1 % of the female prospective teachers and 27.2 % of the male prospective teachers agreed with the statement daily chocolate consumption lowers the blood pressure, while 15.3 % of the female prospective teachers, and 55.6 % of the male prospective teachers disagreed (x 2 =58.583, p<0.05). 59.4 % of the female prospective teachers, and 37.0 % of the male prospective teachers agreed with the statement eating chocolate reduces my depression, while 35.9 % of the female prospective teachers, and 46.9 % of the male prospective teachers disagreed (x 2 =11.056, p<0.05). In addition, the female prospective teachers preferred to eat dark chocolate, chocolate with mixed nuts, flavored chocolate and liquor-filled chocolate more frequently than the male prospective teachers (p<0.05). In conclusion, the female prospective teachers were more attentive and conscious than the male prospective teachers in their chocolate consumption.

Altogether 100 cases were studied to compare the subjective estimates of operative blood loss by anaesthetists (six in number) and by surgeons (22 in number). Their estimates were compared with the blood loss measured by a colorimetric method, which was assumed to be the operative blood loss. The results showed that surgeons are less reliable judges of operative blood loss then anaesthetists. When objective measurement of operative blood loss is impracticable the anaesthetist and the surgeon should jointly make a subjective estimation.

In the mid- to late-1980s white populations in Australia, New Zealand and Scotland showed a sharp increase in melanoma incidence above preceding long-term trends, in some cases as much as doubling in as little as 2 years. Most of this increase was in thin melanomas, (<1.50 mm thick), and males were more affected than females. Thicker melanomas also generally increased in incidence, particularly in males aged 65 years or older. Examination of Australian Medicare and pathology laboratory data indicated that excision of skin lesions and laboratory diagnosis of pigmented lesions also rose sharply in this period, suggesting that advancement of the time of diagnosis was a likely factor in the increase in melanoma incidence. However the maintenance of new higher incidence levels and the increase in incidence of thicker lesions suggests that advancement of diagnosis cannot explain all of the increase. A real increase in incidence and increasing diagnosis of a preexisting, non-metastasizing form of thin melanoma may also have contributed
OBJECTIVES The prevalence of hyponutrition among hospitalized patients varies between 30 to 50%, increasing both the morbidity and mortality rates. The aim of this study is to assess the incidence of hyponutrition in diabetic and non-diabetic patients at the General Surgery Department. METHODS Prospective, observation, and longitudinal study assessing the nutritional status by means of VGS, CONUT, and MNA. RESULTS 384 patients: 97 surgical diabetic patients, incidence of hyponutrition assessed by VGS 28.8%, by MNA among patients older than 65 years 54.28%. Two hundred and eighty seven non-diabetic surgical patients were assessed with an incidence of hyponutrition of 12.9%, and of 52.94% by MNA. CONCLUSIONS The incidence of hyponutrition in surgical diabetic patients is twofold higher than in non-diabetic patients. Elder diabetic and non-diabetic surgical patients show the same incidence of hyponutrition. Given the high incidence of hyponutrition in surgical patients admitted to the General Surgery Department, the nutritional status should be assessed by means of a protocolled method, at admission by VSG or MNA if they are older than 65 years, and admitted patients should be followed by using CONUT.

To assess the clinical significance of a cervical cytological diagnosis of atypical glandular cells of undetermined significance and to formulate the most appropriate management guidelines for patients with such a diagnosis.Retrospective study.Regional hospital, Hong Kong.Seventy-two patients with diagnoses of atypical glandular cells of undetermined significance who were managed in a colposcopy clinic between January 1998 and December 1999.Age, cytological diagnoses of atypical glandular cells of undetermined significance and its subtypes, method of evaluation, final diagnosis, and outcome after 2 years.Atypical glandular cells of undetermined significance were diagnosed in 83 (0.4%) of 21 854 cervical smear samples taken during the 2-year study period. Follow-up data were available from 72 patients, whose mean age was 43 years (range, 22-69 years). Forty-three percent of these patients had significant diseases of the genital tract. Patients with the subtype diagnosis of atypical glandular cells of undetermined significance-favour neoplasia had the worst outcome, with 90% of patients having significant disease, followed by patients with atypical glandular cells of undetermined significance "not otherwise specified" (43%), and atypical glandular cells of undetermined significance-favour reactive (8%).Patients with atypical glandular cells of undetermined significance should be investigated early and thoroughly, because many of them will have premalignant or malignant disease.
