    Abstract:

    Background

    Bicycling can be a beneficial physical activity for children; however, child and parent perceptions of bicyclist safety may influence participation. The Haddon's Matrix breaks down the factors (human, vehicle, environment) and phases (pre-injury, injury, post-injury) that relate to injury outcomes. It has been widely used in quantitative studies of road safety, but less so in qualitative work. Applying Haddon's Matrix to injured child bicyclist interview data may offer insights across qualitative and quantitative paradigms.

    Aim

    To explore injured child bicyclists' perceptions of safety using the Haddon's Matrix.

    Methods

    Injured child bicyclists (aged 5–17) who presented to participating children's hospitals in Vancouver, Calgary, or Toronto from May 2021 - October 2021 were recruited. Forty participants provided responses to open-ended questions on bicycling safety in an interview. A qualitative framework analysis approach was used to identify themes according to the factors and phases of the matrix.

    Results

    Of the factors children perceived as influencing safety, the majority were in the pre-injury phase, with fewer factors in the injury and post-injury phases. Within the pre-injury phase, over half of the factors mentioned related to the physical environment such as surface quality, gravel, and bicycling infrastructure. Children consistently perceived interactions with motor vehicles and a lack of separation from them as reasons for feeling unsafe while bicycling.

    Conclusion

    Children can express factors that influence their perceptions of safety and that align with the Haddon's Matrix. It is important to integrate children's voices to better understand their perceptions of bicycling safety.

    The risk of injury to children riding bicycles has been previously documented. However, the specific risk arising from the use of bicycles as a mode of transportation to and from school is unknown. This study examines the incidence of bicycle related injuries among school age children.A comprehensive prospective injury registration system was established in Stavanger, Norway. Data were obtained from this system to identify bicycle related injuries occurring from 1990-3 to children aged 10-15. The incidence of injuries was computed for two groups of children: (1) children cycling to school and (2) children cycling for other purposes.352 children received medical treatment for bicycle related injuries, 12.6/1000 bicycle riders; 108 (30%) of the 352 children were injured while cycling to or from school. The incidence of bicycle related injuries was significantly higher for boys than girls. Seventy seven per cent of the injuries occurred in a non-collision accident, 9% in a collision with another bicycle, and 14% in a collision with a motor vehicle. Twenty per cent of the injured children sustained upper head injuries and 13% required inpatient treatment. Average maximum abbreviated injury severity (MAIS) score was similar for the injuries sustained during travel to/from school and other injuries.Bicycle related injuries occurring during travel to or from school are a significant contributor to the total incidence of bicycle related injuries. Increased attention among parents, school officials, public health officials, and medical professionals should be paid to this health risk.

    The paper deals with the connection between accidents and occupational diseases due to the weak application of ergonomics in business practice. Applying the principles of ergonomics in the day-to-day running of companies in primary prevention makes it possible to prevent the occurrence and exacerbation of difficulties in the musculoskeletal system of the employees concerned, which can ultimately avert the development of occupational diseases and increase occupational accidents. Ergonomics primarily addresses work environment factors that are cumulatively pathogenic, so their impact on employees will only become apparent after a specific exposure time. In contrast, occupational safety and health focus primarily on thermal and traumatogenic factors of the work environment, which can cause an employee an occupational injury of varying severity or result in death. To comprehensively cover the effects of all work environment factors on employees, the work environment and the work activity itself must be assessed from both occupational health and safety and ergonomics. The observance of ergonomic principles in the solution of workplaces makes it possible to prevent many different costs related to the occurrence of accidents at work and occupational diseases. In most cases, however, these are cost-effective solutions whose effect is not immediately visible, so they are more likely to be reached by companies that apply sustainability principles or have a positive experience of the past. The article focuses on the need to implement ergonomic principles in business practice, such as preventing occupational accidents and developing occupational diseases.

    The authors study pediatric head injuries and the use of appropriate child restraint seats (CRSs) in non motor vehicle crash (MVC) scenarios (i.e. use of the CRS outside the motor vehicle). In a study of Canadian data, non-MVC CRS injuries were 7 times higher than MVC CRS injuries. The most common cause of non-MVC CRS injuries involved falls. Non-MVC CRS victims were found to be significantly younger than MVC CRS victims.
