Abstract:
Biometrics deals with identification of individuals based on their biological or behavioral characteristics. Biometrics has lately been receiving attention in popular media, it is widely believed that biometrics will become a significant component of the identification technology as (i) the prices of biometrics sensors continue to fall (ii) the underlying technology becomes more mature, and (iii) the public becomes aware of the strengths and limitations of biometrics. This chapter provides an overview of the biometrics technology and its applications and introduces the research issues underlying the biometrics.Keywords:

Biometric computing aims to automatically sensing and analyzing the biometric trait,learning models of personal identification,emotion and behavior analysis,healthy condition analysis and aesthetic evaluation using biometric data.Based on the authors' experience on biometric comput-ing research,this paper provides a personal survey on the progress in biometric recognition,medical biometric computing,and aesthetic biometric computing.

At present, the development of biometrics is a widely discussed topic. This research discusses the reliability of the most used category - identification using fingerprints. There are many of these types of systems. The most affordable, and therefore the most common alternative is one that identifies users using an optical sensor. Testing was conducted on two scanners only for fingerprints, and on two systems that recognize users via their fingerprints and also through a facial image. The conclusions from the measurements were that reliability was mainly affected by the characteristics of the scanners, in particular whether the scanner identifies only based on the fingerprint, or in combination with another biometric method. Due to the fact that with combined systems manufacturers focus only on one identification circuit – usually the most modern - and not the potentially safest, i.e. a fingerprint, the results show that it is much easier to sabotage dual biometric identification devices than those that identify solely on the basis of a fingerprint. Reliability values greatly exceed the values specified by the manufacturer. The measurements show that there is a need to continuously improve dual biometric identification systems.

Now day’s security of any area is most important task. At different places security required authentication for that purpose biometric system is commonly used. Biometrics is the most suitable means of identifying and authenticating individuals in a reliable and fast way through unique biological characteristics. In this paper we study some concepts which are related to biometrics like meaning of biometrics, history of biometrics, biometric verification and identification, Biometric Recognition techniques, uses, advantages, disadvantages of biometrics. In todays environment, biometric are play important role for the security purpose .with the help of different type of biometric thief can be easily caught. Various type of physical and behavioral biometric used for the authentication and identification purpose. Physical biometric are most popular and give the highest accuracy rather than behavioral biometric. These biometric are used according to requirement like field where we want to use, cost, and accuracy. Different special devices are needed for using the different biometric. Biometric identification techniques deal with the identification of individuals based on their biological or human behavioral characteristics. Biometric identification methods should be reliable, anti counterfeit, convenient and safe. As the development of a computer, biometric identification techniques will be used widely either in the martial area or in our daily life. The paper summarizes biometric identification techniques. Also it fully discussed the identification principle, character, the advantages and disadvantages of different methods. Many biometrics requirements have led to the extensive study of biometric technologies and the development of numerous algorithms, applications, and systems, which could be defined as Biometrics Computing. This presentation will systematically explain this new research trend. As case studies, a new biometrics technology (palmprint recognition) and two new biometrics applications (medical biometrics and aesthetical biometrics), are introduces. Based on over ten years' experiences, many useful results could be given to illustrate their effectiveness.
