    Abstract:
    Abstract Ericoid mycorrhizae were measured on roots of wild and cultivated highbush blueberries ( Vaccinium corymbosum L.) from 7 locations in southeastern North Carolina over 4 sampling dates. An adequate clearing and staining procedure was developed specifically for observing endomycorrhizae in blueberry roots. Abundant mycorrhizae were found in wild blueberry plants, but few mycorrhizae were noted in cultivated plants. Phosphorus levels were lower in the wild than in the cultivated blueberry soils at most locations.

    На основе сравнительного структурного анализа выявлены особенности анатомии коры 6 представителей сем. Ericaceae, произрастающих на Сахалине и Курильских островах: Ledum hypoleucum, Menziesia pentandra, Gaultheria miqueliana, Vaccinium hirtum, Vaccinium ovalifolium и Vaccinium praestans. Определен комплекс видоспецифичных структурных признаков коры молодых стеблей, скелетных многолетних побегов и стволиков исследуемых видов. Охарактеризованы тенденции структурных возрастных перестроек в коре.

    Four species of tortricids were reared from cultivated blueberries, Vaccinium corymbosum L. (Ericaceae), from four field sites in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina: Clarkeulia bourquini (Clarke, 1949), Clarkeulia deceptiva (Clarke, 1949), Argyrotaenia sphaleropa (Meyrick, 1909), and Platynota meridionalis Brown, 2013. These are the first records of these polyphagous tortricids on Vaccinium. Larvae were discovered primarily on the flowers, buds, and fruit of the host plant, where they fed externally.

    The northern highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L. Ericales, Ericaceae) is very rich in anthocyanins, natural pigments which have strong antioxidant properties and potential health benefits, resulting in the worldwide use the blueberry as a medicinal plant. We investigated the mutagenic potential of simple hydroalcoholic extracts of V. corymbosum acutely administrated by gavage to Swiss mice at doses of 1 g kg-1, 1.5 g kg-1 and 2 g kg-1. Peripheral blood cells were collected 4 h and 24 h post-gavage and assessed by the alkaline comet assay, with further blood samples being collected at 48 h and 72 h for assessment using the micronucleus (MN) assay. Our results show that the V. corymbosum extracts did not induce any statistically significant increase in the average amount of DNA damage in peripheral blood leukocytes. However, we did record a significant increase in the frequency of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes at the three doses tested.

The relationship between age and allocation was determined and a lifetime pattern of biomass partitioning was developed. The proportion of biomass allocated to reproduction was higher than many have predicted for woody species, and the relationship between age and reproductive effort did not conform to optimality models. In addition, reproductive performance was not affected by previous growth or reproduction. The basis of this complex reproductive behavior was examined by quantifying the relationships among components of reproduction. In general, yield components behaved independently within a season. A high potential reproductive effort coupled with yield component independence may be an adaptation to fluctuating environments.

    Caliroa dionae Smith and Moisan-De Serres, n. sp., is described from Quebec. The species was reared from larvae feeding on highbush blueberry, Vaccinium corymbosum L. (Ericaceae) and is the first North American record of a species of Caliroa feeding on Vaccinium. It is distinguished from other North American Caliroa species and from Palearctic species of Caliroa that feed on Vaccinium.
