    Abstract:
Abstract Two coordinated metallacycles (rhomboid for M1 , hexagonal for M2 ) with selenoviologens (SeV 2+ ) pendants were synthesized via coordination‐driven hierarchical self‐assembly. M1 / M2 with rigid and discrete metallacyclic cores showed tunable optoelectronic properties due to strong π–π stacking and push–pull electron structures. Femtosecond transient absorption (fs‐TA) revealed that the formation of macrocyclic structure can not only enhance the stability of radical cation, but also improve the efficiency of intramolecular charge transfer and produce a long‐lived charge separation state. The electrochromic performances of M1 / M2 ‐based devices were exhibited to show decent radical stabilization. By using M1 / M2 as the photocatalyst, the improved catalytic efficiency (>80 %) of visible‐light‐induced cross‐dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) reactions was achieved due to the highly stable radical cations and long‐lived charge separation states, which were also confirmed by fs‐TA.

The properties of electrochromic thin film materials, i.e., those that can be reversibly colored by the passage of charge, are described. The application of some of these thin film compounds for the development of electrochromic windows is discussed.

Electrochromic materials have the possibility to change their colour reversibly when they are transformed in a differently charged state. By applying an external voltage, charged molecules move towards the electrodes where they accept or donate an electron, and obtain a different colour. When the external voltage is switched off, they return to their initial colour. Recently electrochromism has become very popular because of possible application in electronic paper. Important properties of electrochromic materials are switching time, diffusion and reaction speed. Electrical and optical measurements of electrochromic cells are presented. The synthesis and photophysical properties of a new series of dicationic electron transfer sensitizers have been reported. These new materials, pyrylogens, are hybrids of pyrylium cations and Viologen dications. Electron transfer reactions of neutral organic substrates using these new sensitizers generate radical-cation/radical-cation pairs whose repulsive (repellent) interaction is designed to compete with energy wasting return electron transfer (RET) by enhancing diffusive separation and formation of solvent separated ions.
