    Abstract:
This work studies the effects of a through-flow on two-dimensional electrohydrodynamic (EHD) flows of a dielectric liquid confined between two plane plates, as a model problem to further our understanding of the fluid mechanics in the presence of an electric field. The liquid is subjected to a strong unipolar charge injection from the bottom plate and a pressure gradient along the streamwise direction. Highly-accurate numerical simulations and weakly nonlinear stability analyses based on multiple-scale expansion and amplitude expansion methods are used to unravel the nonlinear spatiotemporal instability mechanisms in this combined flow. We found that the through-flow makes the hysteresis loop in the EHD flow narrower. In the numerical simulation of an impulse response, the leading and trailing edges of the wavepacket within the nonlinear regime are consistent with the linear ones, a result which we also verified against that in natural convection. In addition, as the bifurcation in EHD-Poiseuille flows is of a subcritical nature, nonlinear finite-amplitude solutions exist in the subcritical regime, and our calculation indicates that they are convectively unstable. The validity of the Ginzburg-Landau equation (GLE), derived from the weakly nonlinear expansion of Navier-Stokes equations and the Maxwell's equations in the quasi-electrostatic limit, serving as a physical reduced-order model for probing the spatiotemporal dynamics in this flow, has also been investigated. We found that the coefficients in the GLE calculated using amplitude expansion method can predict the absolute growth rates even when the parameters are away from the linear critical conditions, compared favourably with the local dispersion relation, whereas the validity range of the GLE derived from the multiple-scale expansion method is confined to the vicinity of the linear critical conditions.

We are interested in identifying the mean-flow correction in the development of an instability. In the presented configuration (a 2D jet confined in a rectangular cavity that presents an oscillating instability), numerical simulations allow the identification of this mean-flow correction. We show that this distortion contributes to the non-linear saturation of the instability and that it is itself generated by the instability development: the action of the Reynolds tensor due to oscillating terms produces the mean-flow change.

In this paper, we prove the linear stability of the pipe Poiseuille flow for general perturbations at high Reynolds number regime. This is a long-standing problem since the experiments of Reynolds in 1883. Our work lays a foundation for the theoretical analysis of hydrodynamic stability of pipe flow, which is one of the oldest yet unsolved problems of fundamental fluid dynamics.

This paper describes about the fabrication and testing of a novel electrohydrodynamic (EHD) micro-boat using parylene MEMS technology. The driven force of micro-boat utilizes the reaction force of the EHD, with planar electrodes, to pump nonpolar liquid. As a result, by applying a DC voltage of 30-40 V the instantaneous moving velocity of the EHD micro-boat is about 6.5 mm/min.

A novel driving theory on the induction type electrohydrodynamic (EHD) pump driven by traveling electric fields without the temperature gradient is proposed. The micro EHD pump is fabricated by micromaching technology and experimented. We derive the equations of the generating pressure and the flow rate, and discuss the theoretical and the experimental results. The experimental results are consistent with the results of the proposed theory in this paper.

Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) has been applied in many areas, such as EHD atomization, EHD enhanced heat transfer, EHD pump, electrospray nanotechnology, etc. EHD atomization is a promising materials deposition technique as it allows uniform and regular deposition, and offers a range of other advantages, such as low cost compared with other current techniques, easy set-up, high deposition rate, and ambient temperature. Simulation is carried out using ANSYS FLUENT system. The approach in this work was to simultaneously solve the coupled (EHD) and electrostatic equations. The fields of velocities and pressure, as well as electric characteristics of EHD flows, are calculated. The model does not include a droplet break-up model.

A new type of electrohydrodynamic instability previously found is theoretically studied. It is found that the presently observed instability is closely related to the Felici or Bénard type of instability but not to the Carr-Helfrich one. The present study shows the importance of the carrier injection from the electrodes to explain the cellular domain formation under a DC electric field.

The electrohydrodynamic (EHD) instability of an insulating liquid subjected to unipolar injection of ions has been the object of many different studies. It is due to the existence of a potentially unstable distribution of charge in the liquid bulk. Besides that classical instability, it has also been found experimentally that insulating liquids exhibit another kind of EHD instability when subjected to corona discharge from air. This instability, referred to as rose-window instability, is characterized by a pattern of large cells. Both instabilities arise above quite different voltage thresholds. In this paper we write down and numerically solve the linearized equations of motion of the liquid when the air above is considered. Our first aim is to discuss the effect of the air layer on the linear stability threshold for the classical EHD volume instability.

The electrical manipulation of fluids in microsystems has many existing and potential applications. This chapter reviews five different ways of electrohydrodynamic actuation in microdevices. First, we describe the basic equations of Electrohydrodynamics in the microscale, providing some basic concepts of electrical conduction in liquids. We also deal with some basic fluid-mechanical aspects that are common for micropumps. Then, five different electrohydrodynamic micropumps are studied and compared: from those that employ forces in the liquid bulk to those that employ forces in the electrical double layer.
