AbstractTwenty volumes of a new Atlas of the Netherlands, for which a problem-oriented approach is chosen, are published. In this article the chairman of the editorial committee deals with the scope and selection of themes for such a project. Preparing an atlas for a broad public without losing the firm foundation of modern cartographic information handling and scientific geographic analysis presents a challenge. This paper was delivered at the 25th International Geographical Congress in Paris 1984.

Abstract The online Atlas kartograficznych metod prezentacji [Atlas of cartographic presentation methods, hereinafter the Atlas ] is a research project being carried out at the Department of Cartography of the University of Warsaw. The aim of the project is to systematize knowledge about the use of cartographic presentation methods. This study discusses selected issues related to two of the five presentation methods analysed in the project, viz. the choropleth map and the diagram map. A rational application of two quite commonly-used presentation methods leads to a number of problems. These problems are most easily visible during attempts to program its implementation in the web-based Atlas and are largely due to the difficulties with drawing a clear boundary between what is a good and a bad map. For this reason, the system operator’s skill and eye for the graphics of semi-automated visualisation seem to be of key importance.

Little empirical consideration has been given to the usefulness of type for place names on atlas maps for school children. Most previous studies have been concerned with older map users and the conclusions from such studies have generally been applied to younger map users. This study investigates the perceptions and understanding by 160 school children in Australia and England of three different typefaces presented individually or in combination in map form. The study aims to establish which of the selected typefaces is easiest to read and which is preferred by the school children. The children overwhelmingly preferred and understood best a combination of Univers Medium and Univers Bold Condensed typefaces. Children over fifteen years of age were more tolerant of a variety of typefaces.
