Goal 2 of the 2030 Agenda sets out to “End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture”. As with other SDGs, realizing this goal will require a multifaceted approach. To ensure that markets around the world have access to nutritious food requires international trade and cross-border cooperation. With climate change threatening predictability of harvests and the sustainability of many regional crops, the importance of trade in food commodities may well increase rather than diminish.

What do we owe current and future generations of young people? Although there are many ways to respond to this question, most agree that we owe them an education that prepares them for the future. This chapter describes how approach this goal requires us to think differently about the future. Specifically, recognizing that there is not one future but multiple futures. Moreover, it highlights how we need new scenarios for possible futures which go beyond focusing on likely futures and toward preparing young people to navigate unkown futures.

We examine the young dairy futures market as a risk management tool. Using New York Board of Trade (NYBOT) data, we find that the BFP futures market is efficient and may potentially be a useful hedging tool. However, we also find that competition from Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) contracts has significant detrimental effects on the NYBOT dairy futures contracts. As a result NYBOT dairy futures contracts are likely to dry up.

Abstract The process of creating alternative futures, studying those futures, and selectively choosing the most appropriate future is not being done in the field of physical education. The purpose of this paper is to provide background information for those in physical education in higher education regarding futurism, futures research, and especially the consideration of alternative futures. This paper explores facts, concepts, issues, warnings, and suggestions in an attempt to develop a stronger appreciation for futures study, particularly alternative futures, within the discipline.

Although agricultural futures markets offer a number of potential benefits to users, the extent of trade involvemen in UK futures markets has been less than in comparable markets in the United States. This does not appear to be due to poorer hedging performance. An investigation into patterns of use of the London Potato Futures market suggests that nonusers, and to a lesser extent past users, have negative perceptions of futures trading and it is argued that this operates as a barrier to the more extensive use of futures markets among farmers and merchants. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
