Heidegger sketches his analysis of Nietzsche’s Zarathustra as follows:Zarathustra is the speaker, the advocate, the convalescent or the teacher who is never exhausted of preaching his doctrine on the Superman. He preaches on the Superman “…solely because he is the teacher of the Eternal Recurrence of the same.”

Abstract The presence of Persian sources in Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra has been a topic of debate for decades. This paper summarizes the main results of a comparative study of Nietzsche and the ancient Persian scripture Avestā . In addition to several secondary sources Nietzsche repeatedly encountered, there is strong evidence that he read Johann Friedrich Kleuker’s German translation of the Avestā texts reconstructed by Abraham Hyacinthe Anquetil-Duperron. Analyzing Nietzsche’s diverse sources of Zoroastrianism as well as his knowledge of this religion, this paper shows that many metaphors, references and claims in both Thus Spoke Zarathustra and in Nietzsche’s notebooks can be traced back to Zoroastrianism. Taking these sources into consideration contributes significantly to our understanding of one of Nietzsche’s major works.

Abstract It is well-known that as a term, Nietzsche’s Übermensch derives from Lucian of Samosata’s hyperanthropos . I argue that Zarathustra’s teaching of the overman acquires new resonances by reflecting on the context of that origination from Lucian’s Kataplous – literally, “sailing into port” – referring to the soul’s journey (ferried by Charon, guided by Hermes) into the afterlife. The Kataplous he tyrannos , usually translated Downward Journey or The Tyrant , is a Menippean satire of the “overman” who is imagined to be superior to others of “lesser” station in this-worldly life and the same tyrant after his (comically unwilling) transport into the underworld. As a reflection on the life and the death of Zarathustra, this essay also explores the politics of kingship for Empedocles as reformer in terms of Hölderlin’s Death of Empedocles and Nietzsche’s unpublished drafts on the same topic. In Thus Spoke Zarathustra , Nietzsche points to a perspective beyond the here and now, including the “values” of our all-too-worldly and all-too-human concerns, no matter whether in terms of perceived political/economic advantage, or indeed in the pursuit of more trivial satisfactions.

Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra begins with a biographical note: “When Zarathustra was thirty years old, he left his home and the lake of his homeland and went into the mountains” (translation Michael Stausberg). Is that true? Where was Zarathustra’s home, when did he live, and what really happened in his thirtieth year? These questions lead us far away from Sils-Maria, from Europe, from modern times. But we cannot just forget Nietzsche’s literary-philosophical production and the curiously split fascination that is woven around Zarathustra in Europe and simply turn to the “facts of history,” the “real” Zarathustra. In every attempt to solve the riddles surrounding Zarathustra’s life, historical imagination comes into play. Given the fascination with the figure of Zoroaster in European intellectuial history the historical imagination is often guided by stereotypes.

Abstract This chapter provides an overview of Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra. At the beginning of the philosophical life in the strict sense, Nietzsche attributes the passion of knowledge to the philosopher as the passion characteristic of him. Zarathustra, the skeptic, proves on closer inspection to be a philosopher. The philosopher, however, bears the name of a prophet. If Zarathustra is supposed to be both a prophet and a philosopher, the drama must prove the compatibility of the two personae or else make their conflict obvious. Closely bound up with the question of whether Zarathustra is one or two is the other question of whether Nietzsche's Zarathustra is a tragedy, or to what extent it is a parody. The terms philosopher and prophet, tragedy and parody, do not occur in Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Nietzsche consciously places himself within the ambit of the language of the Luther Bible, which in the following book, in which he again speaks with his own voice, he will praise as a "masterpiece of German prose."

In Thus Spoke Zarathustra Nietzsche explores the nature of teaching and learning and concludes that a teacher can do more harm than good in a student's life if she allows her students to become her ‘disciples’. A disciple assigns too much authority to a teacher and thus loses the ability to think independently; this is what Zarathustra means when he warns his students, ‘Beware that you are not killed by a statue!’ In this article I argue that Zarathustra's solution to this problem is to undermine his own authority by performing several different variations of the Liar's Paradox in parts 2 and 3 of Thus Spoke Zarathustra.
