    Gravity-mode period spacings as seismic diagnostic for a sample of gamma Doradus stars from Kepler space photometry and high-resolution ground-based spectroscopy

    Abstract:
    Gamma Doradus stars (hereafter gamma Dor stars) are gravity-mode pulsators of spectral type A or F. Such modes probe the deep stellar interior, offering a detailed fingerprint of their structure. Four-year high-precision space-based Kepler photometry of gamma Dor stars has become available, allowing us to study these stars with unprecedented detail. We selected, analysed, and characterized a sample of 67 gamma Dor stars for which we have Kepler observations available. For all the targets in the sample we assembled high-resolution spectroscopy to confirm their F-type nature. We found fourteen binaries, among which four single-lined binaries, five double-lined binaries, two triple systems and three binaries with no detected radial velocity variations. We estimated the orbital parameters whenever possible. For the single stars and the single-lined binaries, fundamental parameter values were determined from spectroscopy. We searched for period spacing patterns in the photometric data and identified this diagnostic for 50 of the stars in the sample, 46 of which are single stars or single-lined binaries. We found a strong correlation between the spectroscopic vsini and the period spacing values, confirming the influence of rotation on gamma Dor-type pulsations as predicted by theory. We also found relations between the dominant g-mode frequency, the longest pulsation period detected in series of prograde modes, vsini, and log Teff.

    The dynamo process is believed to drive the magnetic activity of stars like the Sun that have an outer convection zone. Large spectroscopic surveys showed that there is a relation between the rotation periods and the cycle periods: the longer the rotation period is, the longer the magnetic activity cycle period will be. We present the analysis of F stars observed by Kepler for which individual p modes have been measure and with surface rotation periods shorter than 12 days. We defined magnetic indicators and proxies based on photometric observations to help characterise the activity levels of the stars. With the Kepler data, we investigate the existence of stars with cycles (regular or not), stars with a modulation that could be related to magnetic activity, and stars that seem to show a flat behaviour.

    New UBV observations of an Ap-star CQ Uma (HD 119213, HR 5153) are compared to all previously published photometry. An improved photometric rotation period, P phot =2. d 4499086±0. d 0000047, is derived, since the new observations more than triple the amount of UBV photometry of CQ UMa and the time span of the photometric observations now exceeds 21 years. We analyze the long-term stability of the light curve, including the mean brightness, amplitude of the rotational modulation of brightness, the phase of the light minimum, and the photometric rotation period

    Abstract The multiple object and multiple frame (MOMF) CCD photometry package, that combines the advantages of aperture and PSF photometry is described. Results from comparisons with other programs are given; no other photometry package was found to give better results than MOMF.

    Abstract I comment on some of the steps required to convert raw instrumental magnitudes, derived by profile-fitting or synthetic-aperture photometry from CCD images, to final calibrated photometry on a standard system. The status of the DAO program to obtain homogeneous BV photometry for star clusters and nearby galaxies will also be discussed.

    The design considerations and operation features of DoPHOT, a point spread function fitting (PSF) photometry program, are described. Some relevant details of the PSF fitting are discussed. The quality of the photometry returned by DoPHOT is assessed via reductions of an 'artificial' globular cluster generated from a list with well known magnitudes and colors. Results from comparative tests between DoPHOT and DAOPHOT using this synthetic cluster and real data are also described.
