    Abstract:
    Perfluorocyclobutyl (PFCB) aryl ether polymers are semi-fluorinated polymers that produce processable, optically transparent materials for a multitude of materials applications. Incorporating low surface energy polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) into the PFCB polymer matrix produced enhanced hydro- and oleo-phobicity. PFCB polymers functionalized with POSS nanostructures include blends, copolymers, and block copolymers. For copolymers, trifluorovinyl aryl ether (TFVE) POSS monomers were prepared in good yields using an operationally simple corner capping methodology from commercial POSS trisilanols. The surface analysis of POSS functionalized PFCB polymer blends and copolymers using microscopy and optical profilometry showed the POSS structures produced sub-micron to nano-meter roughness that contributes to enhanced water and hexadecane repellency.

    The electronic properties of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) have recently been subjected to study. Although theoretical calculations have predicted that POSS can work as an acceptor for π-conjugated organic units, an effective reaction to incorporate aryl groups into a POSS backbone remains to be established. In this work, Rh-catalyzed direct arylation has been developed. Heptaisobutyl-POSS with a Si-H group was reacted with various aryl halides to form aryl-substitued POSSs.

    Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) was a novel organic and inorganic hybrids material developed in recent years. The structure and synthesis of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane and the structure and synthesis of polymer composites based POSS was reviewed in the paper. The thermal properties,flame retardant and mechanical properties of the polymer modified by polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane would be improved,due to the rigid structure and steric hindrance of polyderal oligomeric silsequioxane. This paper reviewed the epoxy resin modified by polyhedral oligomeric silsequioxane.

    (3-Mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane has been hydrolyzed and condensed in methanol solution.The results showed that a mixture of cage,random and trapezoidal silsesquioxane structures was synthesized in the presence of a hydrochloric acid catalyst.Mercaptopropyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane(POSS) was obtained in the presence of the alkaline catalysts Me4NOH or(C6H5CH2)Me3NOH,and the yields were 46% and 64%,respectively.The products were characterized by FT-IR,13C-NMR,29Si-NMR,XRD and DSC. POSS had excellent thermal performance with a high melting point of 352 ℃ and decomposition temperature of 530 ℃.

    Abstract Ring‐opening metathesis copolymerizations of cyclooctene and the polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) monomer 1‐[2‐(5‐norbornen‐2‐yl)ethyl]‐3,5,7,9,11,13,15‐heptacyclopentylpentacyclo[9.5.1.1 3,9 .1 5,15 .1 7,13 ] octasiloxane (POSS–norbornylene) were performed with Grubbs's catalyst, RuCl 2 (CHPh)(PCy 3 ) 2 . Random copolymers were formed and fully characterized with POSS loadings as high as 55 wt %. Diimide reduction of these copolymers afforded polyethylene–POSS random copolymers. Thermogravimetric analysis of the polyethylene–POSS copolymers under air showed a 70 °C improvement, relative to a polyethylene control sample of similar molecular weight, in the onset of decomposition temperature based on 5% mass loss. The homopolymer of POSS–norbornylene was also synthesized. This polymer had a rigid backbone according to 1 H NMR evidence of broad olefinic signals. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
