Abstract:
Positively, this chapter sets out various structural differences between literary and legal interpretation. Negatively, it criticizes views of legal and literary interpretation that attempt to derive their features from an account of interpretation-in-general. The thesis that a successful interpretation always recovers an author’s intention is specifically rejected. A “naïve” view of interpretation is defended—the one that appears when we are sunk in practical activity—as opposed to theories of interpretation (e.g., “postmodern” ones) that tend to picture it as ubiquitous and endless.Topics:
Perusals Into (Post) Modern Thought provides a literary and scholarly introduction to the multi-faceted movement of postmodernism. Building on close readings of important Enlightenment and postmodern texts, Claudia Moscovici explores Enlightenment theories of knowledge and postmodern ethics, offering a cogent introduction to contemporary scholarly debates regarding these subjects. She then supplements the traditional scholarly discussion of postmodernism with a literary response to selected postmodern texts. While her review of scholarly essays provides a general theoretical background to postmodernism, the novella she presents illustrates some of the themes and tropes of postmodern literature. Unique in its approach yet accessible to a wide audience, Perusals Into (Post) Modern Thought is an engaging work that will be of value to students and scholars seeking a better understanding of postmodernism and its cultural effects.

As we move into the postmodern and the post postmodern age, it is time that we glance back at one of the landmark texts of the Modern Period, a text that many critics say announced the Modern times- The Wasteland. Today, through the perspective of postmodernism, I daresay we can look back at this text by a ‘high modernist’ and it will not be wrong to claim that it could be viewed as one of the pioneers of the postmodern movement. This paper attempts to re-read The Wasteland as a postmodern text and proposes that it anticipated a number of the foremost theories of Postmodernism.

The question ofwho is the father of the post-modern novelis one of the remaining problems of the postmodern debate in the Western academic community. This article argues that the viewpoint, namely that the postmodern novel begins from Joyce or Becket, put forward by some western scholars, such as Ihab Hassan and David Lodge,is less than persuasive. The article examines the publication dates of Borges's representative works, his theoretical and literary contributions, and his influence on the other postmodern novelists, pointing out that only Borges is worthy of the reputation of the father of the postmodern novel.

In the midst of the postmodern art tumult of the 1980's there emerged a group of artists whose artwork was outwardly focused and culturally critical in a broad Debordian sense. Focusing on the subjects of postmodern culture, critical postmodern artists depicted the dark side of the postmodern world from their multiple perspectives. They did this with well-crafted works that may communicate on a broader less elitist level. These artists are not neutral toward their subjects.

Postmodernism, which is said to have emerged as a rebellion against modernism, has started to be called with consumer society. On the other hand, advertising in consumer society, strategically gives place to items derived from postmodern art movements in order to appeal target market. This study touches upon how social life is reconstructed in postmodern era and how a new type of consumption culture is created simultaneously. The relation of consumption culture and postmodernism and also development of postmodern art in theoretical and artistic dimensions analyzed in detail. Study refers to the views of Jean François Lyotard and Jean Baudrillard who are pioneers of postmodern thought and explains the reflections of postmodern art movements on advertising with specific examples. The examples of advertisements which were dealt with under the study were examined within the context of postmodern art elements, Lyotard’s and Baudrillard’s postmodern criterias by simulating the real with the simulacrum. Thus the study observed that the advertisements which are created with postmodern art currents largely reflected main criteria of postmodern art and the elements which were emphasised by J. F. Lyotard and J. Baudrillard, two masterminds of the era.
