In this technical demonstration we showcase the current version of the MediaMill system, a search engine that facilitates access to news video archives at a semantic level. The core of the system is a thesaurus of 500 automatically detected semantic concepts. To handle such a large thesaurus in retrieval, an engine is developed which automatically selects a set of relevant concepts based on the textual query and user- specified example images. The result set can be browsed easily to obtain the final result for the query.

Genentech is partnering with the German cancer company Affimed to develop immunotherapies for multiple kinds of solid and blood cancers. Affimed is developing therapies that engage natural killer cells of the innate immune system to help direct them to attack cancer cells. Genentech will pay Affimed $96 million up front and up to $5 billion more in potential payments.

User interfaces to information retrieval systems play a major role in assisting users to search, browse and retrieve information relevant to their needs. This paper provides a review of a category of information retrieval interfaces that are enhanced by incorporating standard thesauri as part of their searching and browsing facilities. A brief account of the rationale behind the integration of thesauri as search aids in such interfaces is provided, based on research literature related to information searching behaviour, information retrieval interface evaluation, search term selection and query expansion. Two categories of search interfaces enhanced with thesauri are examined: those associated with research-based programmes and commercial web-based interfaces to bibliographic databases. Six commercial web-based databases are compared in terms of their thesaurus interface features. It is concluded that, although the number of thesaurus-enhanced interfaces is growing, few studies have focused on user interaction with these interfaces or fully explored the ways in which they can assist users in the search process.

The Thesaurus, in information retrieval, represents one of the cardinal points of a system, since neither indexing quality nor retrieval strategy sophistication are able to remedy deficiencies of the Thesaurus used. In principle, the Thesaurus is a collection of concepts which are more or less important for the subject field of the document collection. Usually the mere list of the terms representing the concepts is enriched by two factors: — lists of synonyms of which one only is considered to be valid (this list also revolves the problem of ambiguities of terms through replacement by univocal terms); —classification schemes which may be both hierarchic and associative and may present different degrees of sophistication. Classification of terms, in information retrieval has the primary task of permitting search on a different level of specificity from that of the documents.

Semantic retrieval is a very potential approach in improving the accuracy of information retrieval and satisfying the customized requirements. This paper annotates the documents with thesaurus and then builds a bi-level indexing structure which from thesaurus element to thesaurus and from thesaurus to document. It makes a conversion from users'query to the thesaurus, then calculates the semantic similarity in the thesaurus network. After doing that, the documents will be sorted in order. The system has been deployed and applied in a company, making the top 5 results hit 90% of users'queries.Experimental results show that the method is effective for semantic retrieval.

Studies on database searching indicate that searching of multiple databases is on the increase. This searching requires the use of multiple thesauri, when a controlled vocabulary search is carried out. The use of multiple thesauri involves identification of terms in the different thesauri. The terms should be analogous to each other and substitutable for one another.
The problem could be stated as: For each term in Thesaurus 1, associate a set of terms in Thesaurus 2, such that the retrieval based on the set of terms from Thesaurus 2 is as effective as the retrieval using the original term from Thesaurus 1. The study examined the feasibility of the vector-space model. The cluster-based approach was used to link terms from two thesauri, 'The Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors' and the 'Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms.' A set of documents, indexed by terms from the two thesauri, was identified and these common documents formed the basis of the study. Co-occurrences of ERIC and Psyc descriptors in the set of common documents were used to form clusters using the Single Link Method. The clusters contained both ERIC and Psyc terms to ensure linking at the time of clustering itself.
Effectiveness of linking was checked by validating each cluster on the basis of pre-established criteria using Precision and Recall, two standard measures in information retrieval. The clusters generated were tested further on another set of documents common to both databases. It was demonstrated that the procedures developed can be used to link thesauri. The advantages of this approach are: linking is done on the basis of the thesaurus terms assigned as descriptors; flexibility in cluster formation is possible; changes in terminology or indexing policies will not affect the basic procedures developed; and problems of reconciling incompatibility among thesauri are circumvented. It was also found that (a) terms which are in a cluster or co-occur do not always exhibit thesaural relationships; (b) a term from one thesaurus is not always linked to only one term from the second thesaurus; and (c) lexically equivalent terms do not always co-occur.

Abstract : The DTNSRDC Library Subject Thesaurus, which exists both as a printed document and as an on-line computer file, supports the indexing and retrieval functions of the library's automated storage and retrieval system. The hierarchical structure of the vocabulary permits generic retrieval. For example, a search on naval vessels will retrieve documents that had been indexed under all naval ship types. Several 'switching' relationships provide an automatic cross-referencing capability.
