Objectivity is a central tenet of modern journalism, but both practitioners and scholars have long expressed dissatisfaction with the concept. In this article, we argue that such dissatisfaction stems from the habit of envisioning objectivity in absolute terms (something is either objective or subjective) as well as in subtractive terms (objectivity is achieved when journalists expunge values from facts). Drawing on Bruno Latour’s work and the constitutive view of communication, we propose instead to approach objectivity as something that gradually emerges within “chains of reference,” through which objects of the world become at once more “mobile,” that is, easier to transport and combine (e.g., through pictures, recordings, testimonies, articles), and more “immutable,” that is, capable of withstanding more and more tests and objections. We then present a method to evaluate how news stories show the various elements that constitute their chains of reference.

After the birth of science, objectivity has always been its foundational glorification. Thus,it has been an important motivation for philosophers of science to explicate how science can get objectivity. While feminist philosophy of science gives a different explanation on the concept and significance of objectivity. The paper analyzes and expounds its view, then puts forward some own ideas.

The aim of this paper is to clarify the difference between science practiced in a world divided up into the true and false and that pursued in a world divided up into objective and subjective. Althogh both truth and objectivity broaden into a spectrum of meanings, they do not coincide. This paper traces the fortunes of the rival epistemological virtues of truth and objectivity less through philosophical pronouncements than through thc quotidien practies of naturalists. The contrast between a regime a truth and one of objectivity is heavy with concrete consequences for everything from the choice of scientific images to the formation of scientific personae.

This book bridges a gap between discussions about truth, human understanding, and epistemology in philosophical circles, and debates about objectivity, bias, and truth in journalism. It examines four major philosophical theories in easy to understand terms while maintaining a critical insight which is fundamental to the contemporary study of journalism. The book aims to move forward the discussion of truth in the news media by dissecting commonly used concepts such as bias, objectivity, balance, fairness, in a philosophically-grounded way, drawing on in depth interviews with journalists to explore how journalists talk about truth.

Journalism critics have repeatedly proposed that journalists adopt scientific standards of objectivity. A comparative survey of 134 German journalists (34%) and 163 academics (33%) from different subject areas was conducted to investigate to what degree scientific criteria of objectivity resonate in journalists’ attitudes toward and understandings of objectivity. Results show that journalists and academics equally think that objectivity is attainable and desirable. Yet members of both professions dealing with cultural or historical subjects consider it less desirable than members dealing with social or natural scientific subjects. Journalists and academics define objectivity in different terms. Journalists think objectivity demands ‘trying to let the facts speak for themselves’, and academics think it requires systematic methods and transparent accounts. In others words, respondents’ attitudes toward objectivity depend on the subjects they deal with, while their understandings of objectivity depend on their professional belonging.

It is worth considering why the science of history in China pursues truth with no idea of objectivity while the western science of history is born with the sense of objectivity.Truth with no objectivity is one-sided truth; however,one-sided truth is more harmful since it is considered as truth. The function of history books is to recode events and hence pass down the information so the historians are supposed to write historical events objectively. Just is objective, but with subjective judgment. Truth with no objectivity is shaky so the science of history requires both truth and objectivity.

Abstract Many philosophers of science have recently argued that extra-academic participation in scientific knowledge production does not threaten scientific objectivity. Quite the contrary: Citizen science, participatory projects, transdisciplinary research, and other similar endeavours can even increase the objectivity of the research conducted. Simultaneously, researchers working in fields in which such participation is common have expressed worries about various ways in which it can result in biases. In this article I clarify how these arguments and worries can be compared, and how extra-academic participation can both increase and threaten the objectivity of the research conducted.
